Thus you are strangers and foreigners no longer, you share the membership of the saints, you belong to God's own household, you are a building that rests on the apostles and prophets as its foundation, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone;

And the wall of the City has twelve foundation-stones, bearing the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Verse ConceptsFoundationsThe Number TwelveFoundations Of NationsWalled TownsTwelve DisciplesTwelve ThingsNew Jerusalem

So when he saw the crowds, he went up the hill and sat down; his disciples came up to him and he opened his lips and began to teach them. He said: "Blessed are those who feel poor in spirit! the Realm of heaven is theirs. read more.

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of goodness! the Realm of heaven is theirs. Blessed are you when men denounce you and persecute you and utter all manner of evil against you for my sake; rejoice and exult in it, for your reward is rich in heaven; that is how they persecuted the prophets before you. You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes insipid, what can make it salt again? After that it is fit for nothing, fit only to be thrown outside and trodden by the feet of men. You are the light of the world. A town on the top of a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp to put it under a bowl; they put it on a stand and it shines for all in the house. So your light is to shine before men, that they may see the good you do and glorify your Father in heaven.

He was still speaking to the crowds when his mother and brothers came and stood outside; they wanted to speak to him. ??- But he replied to the man who told him this, "Who is my mother? and who are my brothers?" read more.
Stretching out his hand towards his disciples he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven, that is my brother and sister and mother."

Jesus answered him, "You are a blessed man, Simon Bar-jona, for it was my Father in heaven, not flesh and blood, that revealed this to you. Now I tell you, Peter is your name and on this rock I will build my church; the powers of Hades shall not succeed against it.

Then came his brothers and his mother, and standing outside they sent to call him; there was a crowd sitting round him, and he was told, "Here are your mother and brothers and sisters wanting you outside." He replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" read more.
And glancing at those who were sitting round him in a circle he said, "There are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God, that is my brother and sister and mother."

For it seems to me that God means us apostles to come in at the very end, like the doomed gladiators in the arena! We are made a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men! We, for Christ's sake, are 'fools'; you in Christ are sensible. We are weak, you are strong; you are honoured, we are in disrepute. To this very hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and knocked about, we are waifs, read more.
we work hard for our living; when reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we put up with it; when defamed, we try to conciliate. To this hour we are treated as the scum of the earth, the very refuse of the world!
