And He got into a boat and crossed to the other side, and went into His home town. And all at once some men were bringing to Him a paralyzed man, lying on a couch. And because He saw their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "Cheer up, my child, your sins are forgiven." Then some of the scribes said to themselves, "He is a blasphemer." read more.
And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said, "Why do you have such wicked thoughts in your hearts? For which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or, to say 'Get up and go to walking'? But to show you that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth" -- turning to the paralyzed man, He said to Him -- "Get up, pick up your bed, and go home." And he got up and went home. And the crowds saw it, and were stricken with awe, and gave praise to God for giving such power to men. And as He was passing along from there, He saw a man named Matthew in his seat at the tax-collector's desk, and He said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed Him. While He was at table in the house many tax-collectors and notorious sinners came in and took their seats at table with Jesus and His disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with tax-collectors and notorious sinners?" And when He heard it, He said, "It is not well, but sick people that have to send for a doctor. Go, learn what this means, 'It is mercy and not sacrifice that I want.' It is not upright but sinful people that I have come to invite." Then John's disciples went up to Him, and said, "Why do we and the Pharisees practice fasting, but your disciples do not?" Jesus said to them, "The wedding guests cannot mourn, can they, as long as they have the bridegroom with them? But a time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. Nobody sews a patch of brand-new goods on an old coat, for such a patch would tear away from the coat, and the hole would be bigger than ever. Nobody pours new wine into old wine-bottles; or, if they do, the bottles burst, the wine runs out, and the bottles are ruined. But people pour new wine into new wine-bottles, and so both are preserved." And just as He was saying these things to them, an official came up and fell on his knees before Him, and said, "My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand upon her and she will come to life." And Jesus got up and followed him; and His disciples, too. And a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years came up and touched the tassel on His coat. For she kept saying to herself, "If I can only touch His coat, I will get well." And Jesus, on turning and seeing her, said, "Cheer up, my daughter! Your faith has cured you." And from that moment the woman was well. And Jesus, on coming to the house of the official, and on seeing the flute-players and the wailing crowd, said, "Go away, for the girl is not dead, but is sleeping." And they began to laugh in His face. But when the crowd had been driven out, He went in and took hold of her hand, and the girl got up. And the news about her spread all over that country.

They went into Capernaum, and as soon as the first Sabbath came, He went into the synagogue and began to teach. And they were dumbfounded at His teaching, for He was teaching them like one who had authority to teach, and not like the scribes. Just at that moment there was a man in their synagogue who was under the spell of a foul spirit, and so he screamed, read more.
"What do you want of us, Jesus, you Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, God's Holy One!" Jesus reproved him, saying, "Hush up, get out of him!" Then the foul spirit convulsed him and with a deafening shriek got out of him. They were all so dumbfounded that they kept discussing it among themselves, and asking, "What does this mean? It is a new teaching. He gives orders with authority even to foul spirits, and they obey Him." And His fame at once spread in all directions all over that part of Galilee. As soon as they left the synagogue, they went home with Simon and Andrew, in company with James and John. And Simon's mother-in-law was confined to her bed with a fever. So they at once told Him about her. Then He went up to her, grasped her hand, and had her get up. The fever left her, and she began to wait upon them. In the evening, when the sun had gone down, they kept on bringing to Him all the people who were sick or under the power of demons, and the whole town gathered at the door. And He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and drove out many demons, and would not let the demons speak a word, because they knew who He was. Early in the morning, long before daybreak, He got up and went out to a lonely spot, and stayed praying there. And Simon and his companions diligently searched for Him and found Him, and said to Him, "Everybody is looking for you." And He said to them, "Let us go somewhere else, to the neighboring towns, to preach in them, too, for that is why I came out here." So He went all over Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. There came to Him a leper, begging Him on his knees, saying to Him, "If you want to, you can cure me." And His heart was moved with pity for him, so He stretched out His hand and touched him, and said, "I do want to! Be cured!" And the leprosy at once left him, and he was cured. But Jesus at once drove him out of their presence, and gave him this stringent charge: "See that you tell nobody a single word about it. Be gone, show yourself to the priest, and to prove it to the people, make the offering for your purification which Moses prescribed." But he went out and began to publish it so much and to spread the story so far, that Jesus could not any more go into any town openly, but had to stay out in thinly settled places. But the people kept coming to Him from every quarter.

Then He went into a synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand. And they kept closely watching Him, to see whether He would cure him on the Sabbath, to get a charge to bring against Him. But He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up in the crowd." read more.
Then He asked them, "Is it right to do people good on the Sabbath, or to do them evil, to save life or to take it?" But they had nothing to say. So Jesus looked around at them in anger, because He was pained over their stubbornness of mind, and said to the man, "Hold out your hand." And he held it out, and his hand was cured. Then the Pharisees went out and held a consultation with the Herodians against Him, to put Him to death.

When He had finished all these sayings in the hearing of the people, He went into Capernaum. There was a Roman captain who had a slave that was very dear to him, and he was sick and at the point of death, When the captain heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to Him, to ask Him to come and bring his slave safe through the illness. read more.
So they went to Jesus and continued to urge Him earnestly, saying, "He deserves that you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the man who built us our synagogue." Then Jesus started to go with them. But when He was not far from the house, the captain sent friends to say to Him, "My Lord, stop troubling yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. And so I did not deem myself worthy even to come to you. But simply speak the word, and let my servant-boy be cured. For I too am under authority of others, and have soldiers under me, and I order one to go, and he goes, another to come, and he comes, my slave to do this, and he does it." When Jesus heard this, He was astounded at him, and turning to the crowd that was following Him He said, "I tell you, I have not found, in a single case among the Jews, so great faith as this!" Then the messengers returned to the house and found the slave well.

So He came back to Cana in Galilee where He had turned the water into wine. Now there was at Capernaum an officer of the king's court whose son was sick. When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to Him and began to beg Him to come down and cure his son, for he was at the point of death. Then Jesus said to him, "Unless you see signs and wonders, you will never believe." read more.
The king's officer pleaded with Him, "Sir, come down at once before my child is dead!" Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son is going to live." The man believed what Jesus said to him and started home. While he was still coming down, his slaves met him and told him, "Your boy is going to live." So he asked them at what hour he began to get better, and they said to him, "Yesterday at one o'clock the fever left him." Then the father knew that that was the very hour when Jesus had said to him, "Your son is going to live." So he and his whole household believed in Jesus.

and got into a boat and started across the sea to Capernaum. Now it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. The sea was getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terror-stricken. read more.
But He said to them, "It is I; stop being afraid!" Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat came to the shore it was making for. Next day the people who had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there was only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gotten into it with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone away by themselves. Other boats from Tiberias had landed near the place where the people ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into boats themselves and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus. So when they had crossed the sea and found Him, they asked Him, "Teacher, when did you get here?"

And when He heard it, He said, "It is not well, but sick people that have to send for a doctor. Go, learn what this means, 'It is mercy and not sacrifice that I want.' It is not upright but sinful people that I have come to invite."

This is the right thing to do and it pleases God our Saviour, who is ever willing for all mankind to be saved and to come to an increasing knowledge of the truth.



And when He heard it, He said, "It is not well, but sick people that have to send for a doctor. Go, learn what this means, 'It is mercy and not sacrifice that I want.' It is not upright but sinful people that I have come to invite."


For since the law cast only a shadow of the blessings to come and did not possess the reality itself of those blessings, the priests with the same sacrifices that are perpetually offered year after year cannot make perfect those who come to worship. Otherwise, would they not have ceased offering them, because those who offered them, having once been purified, would have had no further consciousness of sins? On the other hand, through these sacrifices there is given a real reminder of their sins, read more.
for the blood of bulls and goats is unable to take away sins. So, when Christ was coming into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not wish, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt-offerings and sin-offerings you never took delight. Then I said, 'See, I have come, just as the Scripture writes about me in the book, O God, to do your will.'" Although at first He said, "You never wished or took delight in sacrifices and offerings, burnt-offerings and sin-offerings" -- all of which are repeatedly offered in accordance with the law -- He afterward said, "See, I have come to do your will." He is taking away the first to let the second take its place.

But as for you, you must not seek for others to call you 'Teacher,' for you have but one who is 'Teacher,' and you are all brothers. And you must not call anyone on earth 'father,' for the Heavenly One is your Father. And you must not be called 'leaders,' for you have only one Leader, and that is Christ.

"The scribes and Pharisees have taken Moses' seat as teachers. So everything they tell you, do and practice, but stop doing what they do, for they preach but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens and fasten them on men's shoulders, but they refuse to lift a finger to help bear them.

You say, 'Whoever swears by the altar is not duty-bound, but whoever swears by the offering on the altar is duty-bound!' You blind men! which is greater, the offering, or the altar that makes the offering sacred? So whoever swears by the altar swears by everything on it; whoever swears by the sanctuary swears by it and by Him who dwells in it; whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it. "A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees! For you pay tithes on mint and dill and cummin, and yet leave out the more vital matters of the law, justice, love and fidelity. These latter especially you ought to have done, but ought not to have left out the former. You blind leaders, who are straining out the gnat but gulping down the camel! A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, for you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of your greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisees! You must first clean the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside may be clean too. "A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, for you are like white-washed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead people's bones and everything that is unclean! So you, too, on the outside seem to people to be upright, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. "A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, for you build tombs for the prophets, and decorate monuments for the upright, and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have been sharers with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' So you are witnessing against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Then fill up to the brim the cup of your forefathers' guilt! You serpents! You brood of vipers! How can you escape a sentence to the pit! Therefore, I am going to send you prophets, wise men, and scribes, some of whom you will kill -- even crucify -- and some you will flog in your synagogues and chase from city to city, so that on you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of upright Abel to the blood of Zechariah, Barachiah's son, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

Everyone must be seasoned with fire. Salt is a good thing, but if salt loses its strength, how can you season it again? You must keep on having salt within you, and keep on living in peace with one another."



Then Jesus in the power of the Spirit returned to Galilee, and news of Him spread all over the surrounding country. Meanwhile He began to teach in their synagogues, and was continuously receiving praise from all. So He came to Nazareth where He had been brought up, and as His habit was on the Sabbath, He went to the synagogue and stood up to read. read more.
The roll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him, and He unrolled it and found the place where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has consecrated me to preach the good news to the poor; He has sent me to announce release to captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to send the downtrodden away in liberty and

Now the Pharisees and their scribes were grumbling at His disciples, and were saying, "Why are you eating and drinking with tax-collectors and notorious sinners?" But Jesus answered them, "Not well but sick people have to send for the doctor. It is not upright but sinful people that I have come to invite to repentance."

Is anyone sick among you? He should call in the elders of the church, and they should pray over him, and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer that is offered in faith will save the sick man; the Lord will raise him to health, and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. So practice confessing your sins to one another, and praying for one another, that you may be cured. An upright man's prayer, when it keeps at work, is very powerful.

Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were keeping a fast. So some people came and asked Him, "Why do John's disciples and the Pharisees' disciples practice fasting, but yours never do?" Then Levi gave a great reception for Him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax-collectors and others who were at table with them. Now the Pharisees and their scribes were grumbling at His disciples, and were saying, "Why are you eating and drinking with tax-collectors and notorious sinners?" But Jesus answered them, "Not well but sick people have to send for the doctor. read more.

After that they said to Him, "John's disciples rigidly practice fasting and offering up prayers; so do the Pharisees, but your disciples keep right on eating and drinking." Then He told them a short story: "No one tears a piece from a new coat and puts it on an old one; or if he does, he will tear the new one too, and the patch from the new coat will not match the old one. So no one puts fresh wine into old wine bottles; or, if he does, the fresh wine will burst the bottles, the wine will run out, and the bottles will be ruined. But fresh wine must be put into new bottles. No one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, 'The old is good enough.'"
