Now every girl, when her turn came, had to go in to King Ahasuerus. After undergoing, for a space of twelve months, what was ordered by the law for the women for this was the time necessary for making them clean, that is, six months with oil of myrrh and six months with sweet perfumes and such things as are needed for making women clean.

Your good ointment has a pleasing aroma. Your name is like pure ointment. Therefore the maidens do love you.

How fair is your love, my sister, and my spouse! How much better is your love than wine! The smell of your perfume than all spices!

You drink wine in bowls, and anoint yourselves with the finest oils. But you are not grieved because of the affliction of Joseph.

A good name (honor) (renown) (reputation) is better than pleasant ointment and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

He was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper. While he was dining a woman with an alabaster vase filled with costly perfume, of pure nard (spikenard), brake it open and poured it over his head. Some were very indignant over this. They asked, What was the purpose of this waste of ointment? This ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii. And the money could have been given to the poor. They scolded her.

Mary took a pound of very precious ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus. She wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the odor of the ointment. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would betray him said: Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred danarii, and given to the poor?


A woman came to him having an alabaster vase containing very precious ointment. She poured it upon his head while he was eating.
