Indeed, I eat ashes like bread and mix my drink with tears because of your indignation and anger, for you have picked me up and thrown me away.

If his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my judgments, if they defile my statutes and do not keep my commandments, then I will punish their transgression with rod, and their guilt with wounds.

For we are brought to an end by your anger, and we hasten [off] by your wrath. You have put our iniquities before you, our hidden [sins] into the light of your countenance. For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh.

O Yahweh our God, you answered them. You were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their [wrong] deeds.

Look, you have made my days [mere] handbreadths, and my lifespan as nothing next to you. Surely every person standing firm [is] complete vanity. Selah

Remember what my lifespan [is]. [Remember] for what vanity you have created all [the] children of humankind.

For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh.

For who knows what [is] good for a man in his life during the few days of his fleeting life, which are fleeting as a shadow? For who can tell anyone what will happen {in the future} under the sun?
