The man was Elimelech, and his wife was Naomi, and the two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. They went to Moab and stayed there.

They took two women of Moab as their wives. One was Orpah and the other Ruth. They made their home there for about ten years. Mahlon and Chilion also died. Naomi was left all alone. She had no husband or sons.

Then Boaz said to the leaders and all the others there: You are all witnesses today that I have bought from Naomi everything that belonged to Elimelech and to his sons Chilion and Mahlon.

Then Boaz said to the close relative: Naomi has come back from the country of Moab. She is offering for a price that bit of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech.

Boaz was a relative of Naomi. He was a wealthy man from the family of Elimelech. Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi: Now let me go into the fields and pick up the heads of grain after anyone in whose eyes I find favor. She said to her: Go, my daughter.


Mahlon and Chilion also died. Naomi was left all alone. She had no husband or sons.

In addition, Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon's widow, becomes my wife. This will keep the property in the dead man's family, and his family line will continue among his people in his hometown. Today you are witnesses to this.
