When, therefore, they had taken breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter: Simon, son of Jonah, Do you love me more than these? He said to him: Yes, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my lambs. He said to him again a second time: Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? He said to him: Yes, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Be a shepherd to my sheep. He said to him a third time: Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? Verily, verily I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself, and walked whither you chose; but when you have become old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird you, and lead you whither you would not. For I have come to set a man at variance with his father, and the daughter with her mother, and the daughter-in-law with her mother-in-law: and a man's enemies shall be those of his own household. He that loves father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me: and whoever does not take his cross and fol low after me, is not worthy of me. He that finds his life shall lose it; and he that loses his life for my sake, shall find it.

If any one comes to me, and hates not his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and his own life also, he can not be my disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross, and come after me, can not be my disciple.
