Truly, truly do I say to thee, when thou wast young, thou didst gird thyself, and walk whither thou wouldst; but when thou hast grown old, thou wilt stretch forth thy hands, and another will gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldst not. Every one therefore who shall acknowledge me before men, him will I also acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. For I came to set a man at variance with his father, and a daughter with her mother, and a bride with her motherinlaw; and they of a mans own household will be his foes. He that loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me; and he that doth not take his cross, and follow me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life will lose it; and he that loseth his life for my sake will find it.

If any one cometh to me, and hateth not his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever doth not bear his own cross and follow me, cannot be my disciple.
