While I was speaking in prayer, the spirit person [who looked like a man] Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, was inspired to come quickly and touch me. It was about the time of the evening offering. He instructed me: O Daniel, he said, I have now come to give you wisdom (insight) and understanding. At the beginning of your supplications the commandment went forth. I came to report to you for you are greatly loved. Consider the matter, and understand the vision.
Do not judge anything before the time. Wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and make apparent the counsels of the hearts. Then each man's praise will come from God.
It is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, and it has not entered into the heart of man, the things God prepared for those who love him. (Isaiah 64:4) But God revealed them to us by his Spirit. For the Spirit investigates (searches) all things, yes even the deep things of God.
Yet you are proud to say that you are citizens of the holy city and that you depend on Israel's God, whose name is Jehovah of Hosts. Daniel said: Praise be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are his. He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings, and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals the deep and hidden things. He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.
