And Jesus hearing it, withdrew thence by ship into a desert place apart: but when the people heard thereof, they followed him by land out of the cities. And going forth he saw a great multitude, and was moved with tender compassion for them, and healed their sick. And in the evening his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past: send the multitude away, that going into the villages, they may buy themselves victuals. read more.
But Jesus said to them, They need not go: give ye them to eat. They say to him, We have here but five loaves and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up to heaven, he blessed and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they all ate and were satisfied: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. And they that had eaten were about five thousand, beside women and children.
But Jesus said to them, They need not go: give ye them to eat. They say to him, We have here but five loaves and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up to heaven, he blessed and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they all ate and were satisfied: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. And they that had eaten were about five thousand, beside women and children.
And the apostles gather themselves together to Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And he said to them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while. For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by boat privately. read more.
And many saw them departing and knew him, and ran a foot thither from all the cities, and outwent them, and came together to him. And Jesus coming out saw a great multitude, and was moved with tender compassion for them; because they were as sheep having no shepherd, and he taught them many things. And when the day was now far spent, the disciples coming to him said, This is a desert place, and it is now late. Send them away, that they may go into the country and villages round about, and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat. He answered and said to them, Give ye them to eat. And they say to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He saith to them, How many loaves have you? Go and see. And when they knew, they said, Five, and two fishes. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies on the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves, and the two fishes, looking up to heaven, he blessed, and gave them to the disciples to set before them: and he divided the two fishes among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments and of the fishes. And they that had eaten of the loaves, were about five thousand men.

And the apostles returning told him what they had done. And he took them and went aside privately into the desert of Bethsaida. And when the multitudes knew it, they followed him, and he received them and spake to them of the kingdom of God and healed them that had need of healing. And the day began to decline. And the twelve coming to him said, send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge and find victuals: for we are here in a desert place. read more.

(But this he said, trying him; for he himself knew what he intended to do.) Philip answered him, Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that each of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith to him, Here is a lad, who hath five barley-loaves and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? Jesus said, Make the men sit down. (Now there was much grass in the place) So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. Then Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were sat down, and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
