For from the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies: these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.

For to wish is present with me, but to do the good is not; for the good which I wish I do not, but the evil which I wish not this I do. But if what I wish not this I do, I no longer do it, but sin which dwells in me. I find therefore the law, that when I wish to do good evil is present with me; for I consent to the law of God as to my inward man, [my soul], but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, and making me captive to the law of sin which is in my members.
