To what shall I liken this generation? It is like little children sitting in the markets, who call to their companions, and say, We have played on pipes for you, and you have not danced; we have mourned, and you have not lamented.


[And he said], To what then shall I compare the men of this generation? and what are they like? And a certain poor man by the name of Lazarus was laid at his gate, afflicted with ulcers, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table; but the dogs also came and licked his ulcers.
