promising them liberty, they themselves being the slaves of corruption: for to whatsoever any one has been subordinated, to this he has become enslaved.

Jesus responded to them, Truly, truly, I say unto you, That every one doing sin is the slave of sin.

No temptation has overtaken you, except that which is human: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what you are able, but with the temptation, He will also make a way of escape, in order that you may be able to bear it.

Likewise let the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not fond of filthy lucre;

not given to wine, not a controvertist; but gentle, peaceable, not a money lover;

For now I have written unto you not to keep company with him, if any one denominated a brother may be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a scold, or drunken, or an extortioner; with such a one not to eat.

For it behooves the bishop to be blameless, as the steward of God; not audacious, not irascible, not given to wine, not a controvertist, not fond of filthy lucre;

nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor scolds, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

In which you indeed at one time did walk about, when you lived in them:

lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

I speak after the manner of a man on account of the weakness of your carnality. For as ye presented your members as servants unto impurity and lawlessness pursuant to lawlessness, so now present your members servants unto righteousness pursuant to sanctification. For when you were the servants of sin, you were free from righteousness.

For many walk about, of whom I frequently spoke to you, and now I speak even weeping, the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose God is their stomach, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.

If therefore the Son may make you free, you shall be free indeed.
