Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in wise: when Mary his mother was promised in marriage to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child by the Holy Ghost: but Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was inclined to break off the contract with her privately; and when he was thinking on these things, behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph thou Son of David, scruple not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.read more.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. (Now all this came to pass, that it might be fulfilled, which the Lord spake by the prophet, saying, "Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," which is God with us.) So Joseph, when he awoke from his sleep, did as the angel of the Lord directed him, and took home his wife: and he knew her not, till she brought forth her Son the first-born, and he called his name Jesus.

But in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin who was betrothed to a man, whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. And when the angel came in to the room to her, he said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured; the Lord is with thee;read more.
blessed art thou among women! and when she saw him, she was confused at what he said, and pondered in her mind what sort of salutation this could be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favor with God: and behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS: He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God shall give Him the throne of David his father, and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? And the angel answered and said unto her, The holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee, and therefore thine holy offspring shall be called the Son of God: and lo, thy cousin Elisabeth also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren; for nothing is impossible with God. Then Mary said, Behold the servant of the Lord, may it be unto me according to thy word. So the angel departed from her.

Now in those days an edict was published by Augustus Cesar, that all the world should be enrolled or taxed, (this tax was first levied when Cyrenius was governor of Syria) and they all went to be enrolled, every one to his own city:read more.
so Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and line of David) to be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was big with child. And while they were there, the days of her delivery were fulfilled, and she brought forth her son, the first-born, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night: and lo, an angel of the Lord stood over them, and the glory of the Lord shone round them, and they were greatly terrified: and the angel said to them, Be not affrighted; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people, that this day is born, in the city of David, your Saviour Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you, Ye shall find the child wrapped in swaddling bands lying in a manger. And on a sudden there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good-will towards men. And when the angels went from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go to Bethlehem, and see this which hath been told us, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with speed, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger: and when they had seen it, they divulged what had been told them concerning this child: and all that heard it, were amazed at the things which were related to them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured up all these words, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all the things which they had heard and seen, according as it had been told unto them.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came certain wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is the king of the Jews that is born here? for we have seen his star in the east and are come to worship Him.

And again Esaias saith, "There shall be a root of Jesse, and one that shall rise to rule over the Gentiles: in Him shall the Gentiles trust." Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope through the power of the holy Spirit.

For whatever things were written heretofore, were written for our instruction; that we through patience and the consolation of the scriptures might have hope. And may the God of patience and consolation grant you the like mutual affection to each other, according to the example of Christ Jesus: that with one mind and one mouth ye may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.read more.

Now in those days came John the baptist preaching in the desert part of Judea, and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand: for this is He who was spoken of by Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the desert, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."read more.
And this John had his clothes of camels hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then went, out to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan, and they were baptized by him in Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the pharisees and sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits becoming: penitents: and do not say within your selves, "We have Abraham for our father:" for I tell you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. And now the ax is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore, which yieldeth not good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but He that cometh after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry: He shall baptize you with the holy Spirit and with fire. Whose fan is in his hand, and He will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and gather the wheat into his granary, but will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

And this let us observe, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us behave decently as being in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lasciviousness, not in strife and envying.read more.
But put on the Lord Jesus, and make not provision for the flesh to gratify its irregular desires.
