in order to fit his people for the work of service, for building the body of Christ,

For it is under his control that the whole system, adjusted and united by each ligament of its equipment, develops in proportion to the functioning of each particular part, and so builds itself up through love.

For suppose I do boast a little too much of my authority??hich the Lord gave me to build you up, not to pull you down?? will not have to blush for it.

Have you been supposing all along that it is before you I have been defending myself? It is in the sight of God and as a follower of Christ that I have been speaking. But it is all to do you good, dear friends,

No bad word must ever pass your lips, but only words that are good and suited to improve the occasion, so that they will be a blessing to those who hear them.

Then what is the right course, brothers? When you meet together, suppose every one of you has a song, a teaching, a revelation, an ecstatic utterance, or an explanation of one; it must all be for the good of all.

Now I commit you to the Lord, and to the message of his favor, which will build you up and give you a place among those whom God has consecrated.

About food that has been offered to idols, it is true, as you say, that we all have some knowledge on that matter. Knowledge gives people airs; love is what builds up character.

Anyone who speaks ecstatically does himself good, but the inspired preacher does a congregation good.

But the inspired preacher does his fellow-men good and encourages and comforts them.

I want you all to speak ecstatically, but I especially want you to be inspired to preach. The man who is inspired to preach is more useful than the one who speaks ecstatically??nless he can explain what he says so that it may do the church some good.

You must be rooted and built up in him and made strong in faith, just as you were taught to be, overflowing with it in your gratitude.

You are giving thanks well enough, but it is doing him no good.

We are free to do anything, but not everything is good for us. We are free to do anything, but not everything builds up character.
