Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. Sarai said to Abram, "See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my handmaid. It may be that I will obtain children by her." Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?"

He settles the barren woman in her home, as a joyful mother of children. Praise the LORD.
"Sing, barren, you who did not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you who did not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than of her that has a husband," says the LORD.
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
And look, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
For look, the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'

Her rival taunted her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb. As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she taunted her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I will die."
