The God of this people chose our fathers, and he exalted the people in their sojourn in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm he brought them out of it; and for about forty years he nourished them in the wilderness. And having destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as a possession.

Not as though the word of God hath failed; for not all they that are of Israel are Israel; nor because they are descendants of Abraham are they all children; but, "Thy offspring shall be reckoned from Isaac." That is, not the children by natural descent are children of God, but the children to whom the promise is made are accounted as the offspring.

What Israel seeketh after, that Israel did not obtain; but the elect obtained it, and the rest were hardened; as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of slumber, eyes that were not to see, and ears that were not to hear, unto this day."
