He answered and said to them, Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven; but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and he shall have abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even what he hath. Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah who saith, Hearing ye will hear, but in no wise understand, and seeing ye will see, but in no wise perceive. For the heart of this people is waxed fat, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed: lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and should be converted and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say to you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see the things which ye see, and have not seen them, and to hear the things which ye hear, and have not heard them. Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and considereth it not, the wicked one cometh, and catcheth away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the way-side. But he who received the seed in stony places, is he that heareth the word, and immediately receiveth it with joy. Yet hath he not root in himself, and so endureth but for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straight-way he is offended. He that received the seed among the thorns, is he that heareth the word: and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed on the good ground, is he that heareth the word and considereth it: who also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth some an hundred fold, some sixty, some thirty. He proposed to them another parable, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man sowing good seed in his field. But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel amidst the wheat, and went away. And when the blade was sprung up and brought forth fruit, then appeared the darnel also.

But that on the good ground are they, who, having heard the word, keep it in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with perseverance.
