For anyone who is in the habit of doing wrong hates the light, and to keep his actions from being reproved, he does not come out into the daylight.

So I am always striving to have a conscience that is clear before God and men.

I am telling the truth as a Christian man. I am telling no lie, because my conscience enlightened by the Holy Spirit is bearing me witness to this fact,

But the aim of your instruction is to be love that flows out of a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.

But you must do it in gentleness and reverence, and keep your conscience clear, so that those who bitterly abuse your excellent conduct as Christians may be ashamed of slandering you.
