Had the miracles performed in you been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have been sitting penitent in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And you, O Capharnahum! Exalted to heaven? No, you will sink to Hades! This is what I command you, to love one another. If the world hates you, remember it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love what it owned; it is because you do not belong to the world, because I have chosen you from the world, that the world hates you.

He who says he is 'in the light' and hates his brother, is in darkness still. We know we have crossed from death to life, because we love the brotherhood; he who has no love [for his brother] remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining within him.

If anyone declares, 'I love God,' and yet hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who will not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot possibly love the God whom he has never seen.

So Jesus spoke; then, lifting his eyes to heaven, he said: "Father, the time has now come; glorify thy Son that thy Son may glorify thee, since thou hast granted him power over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom thou hast given to him. It is that the word written in their Law may be fulfilled: they hated me for no cause.

Jesus said to them, "My time has not come yet, but your time is always at hand; the world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its deeds are evil. Go up to the festival yourselves; I am not going up to this festival, for my time has not arrived yet."

He who loves his life loses it, and he who cares not for his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.

for anyone whose practices are corrupt loathes the light and will not come out into it, in case his actions are exposed,
