And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, we pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is bad, and the land miscarrieth. And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast salt therein, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or miscarrying.

Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

Let them be as a snail which melteth and passeth away, Like the untimely birth of a woman, that hath not seen the sun.

Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, As infants that never saw light.

Give them, O Jehovah-what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

And if men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow; he shall be surely fined, according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follow, then thou shalt give life for life,
