For when God made the promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no greater, He sware by Himself, saying, "Verily blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee."

For men swear by a greater Being, and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all controversy. Wherefore God being willing more abundantly to manifest unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it with an oath: that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to fail, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us;

to display his mercy towards our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant, according to the oath which He sware to Abraham our father,

Therefore being a prophet; and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Messiah, to sit on his throne;

Moreover inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath, (for they indeed are become priests without the solemnity of an oath; but He with an oath, by Him who said unto Him, "The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:") by so much is Jesus become the surety of a better covenant. And they were many priests, because they were by death hindered from continuing in their office; but He, because He abideth for ever, hath a priesthood that passeth not to any other: wherefore also He is able to save to the uttermost, those that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high-priest was meet for us, who was holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and higher than the heavens; who hath no need, as the Levitical high-priests had, daily to offer sacrifices first for his own sins, and then for those of the people: for this He did once for all, in offering up Himself. For the law appointeth men high-priests, who have infirmity; but the oath, recorded since the law, appointeth the Son to be priest for ever, being fully perfected for it.

wherefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, They are always erring in their heart, and they have not known my ways: so I sware in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest."
