For when God made the promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no greater, He sware by Himself, saying, "Verily blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee."

according to the oath which He sware to Abraham our father,

Therefore being a prophet; and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Messiah, to sit on his throne;

(for they indeed are become priests without the solemnity of an oath; but He with an oath, by Him who said unto Him, "The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:")

Moreover inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath,

Wherefore God being willing more abundantly to manifest unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it with an oath:
