The Pharisees came out and began a discussion with him, testing him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. And he sighed deeply and said, "Why do the men of this day ask for a sign? I tell you, no sign will be given them."
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees addressed him, saying, "Master, we would like to have you show us some sign." But he answered, "Only a wicked and faithless age insists upon a sign, and no sign will be given it but the sign of the prophet Jonah.
As the crowds pressed a round him, he went on to say, "This is a wicked age! It demands a sign, and no sign will be given it but the sign of Jonah.
And he said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rise in the west, you say at once, 'It is going to rain,' and it does. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'It is going to be very hot,' and it is. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the look of the earth and sky; and why can you not interpret this present time?
When Herod saw Jesus he was delighted, for he had wanted for a long time to see him, because he had heard about him and he hoped to see some wonder done by him.
Then the Jews addressed him and said, "What sign have you to show us, for acting in this way?"
Then they said to him, "Then what sign do you show for us to see and so come to believe you? What work are you doing?
