"The dead tremble -- those beneath the waters and all that live in them.

When a wicked person dies, his expectation perishes, and the hope of his strength perishes.

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might, because there is neither work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave, the place where you will eventually go.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything; they have no further reward -- and even the memory of them disappears.

For no one remembers you in the realm of death, In Sheol who gives you thanks?

Are your amazing deeds experienced in the dark region, or your deliverance in the land of oblivion?

I am forgotten, like a dead man no one thinks about; I am regarded as worthless, like a broken jar.

adrift among the dead, like corpses lying in the grave, whom you remember no more, and who are cut off from your power.

Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and give you thanks? (Selah) Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave, or your faithfulness in the place of the dead?

The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any of those who descend into the silence of death.

Indeed Sheol does not give you thanks; death does not praise you. Those who descend into the pit do not anticipate your faithfulness.

If the Lord had not helped me, I would have laid down in the silence of death.

For a fire has been kindled by my anger, and it burns to lowest Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and ignites the foundations of the mountains.

Answer me quickly, Lord! My strength is fading. Do not reject me, or I will join those descending into the grave.

Certainly my enemies chase me. They smash me into the ground. They force me to live in dark regions, like those who have been dead for ages.

He has made me reside in deepest darkness like those who died long ago.

Say to them, 'Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised!'

"But as for you, in the midst of the uncircumcised you will be broken, and you will lie with those killed by the sword.

The bravest of the warriors will speak to him from the midst of Sheol along with his allies, saying: 'The uncircumcised have come down; they lie still, killed by the sword.'

Among the dead they have made a bed for her, along with all her hordes around her grave. All of them are uncircumcised, killed by the sword, for their terror had spread in the land of the living. They bear their shame along with those who descend to the pit; they are placed among the dead.

They do not lie with the fallen warriors of ancient times, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, having their swords placed under their heads and their shields on their bones, when the terror of these warriors was in the land of the living.

But you should go your way until the end. You will rest and then at the end of the days you will arise to receive what you have been allotted."
