Behold, this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be burdensome to you; for I seek not yours, but you; for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
On the first day of the sabbaths, let each one of you lay by him, treasuring it up, as he may prosper, that no collections be made, when I come.
Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands that which is good, that he may have to impart to him that has need.
And, when they were filled, He saith to His disciples, "Gather up the pieces that remain over, that nothing be lost." So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves, which remained over to those who had eaten.
But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was about to betray Him, says, "Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred denaries, and given to the poor?" And he said this, not because he cared about the poor; but because he was a thief; and, having the money-box, he was wont to carry what was put therein.
And the disciples, seeing it, were much displeased, saying, "To what purpose is this waste? For this might have been sold for much, and given to the poor!"
But there were some who were much displeased among themselves, saying, "To what purpose has this waste of the ointment been made? For this ointment could have been sold for above three hundred denaries, and given to the poor!" And they were murmuring against her.
But I say this: He that sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he that sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully.
And He said to them, "Take heed, and guard yourselves from all covetousness; because one's life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses."
And He spake a parable to them, saying, "A certain rich man's field yielded bountifully; and he reasoned within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, because I have not where to store my fruits?' And he said, 'This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there will I store all my grain and my goods.read more.
And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have much goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Senseless one! this night they require your soul of you; and the things you prepared, whose shall they be?' So is he who is laying up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
And He said to His disciples, "Therefore, I say to you, be not anxious for your soul, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on; for the soul is more than the food; and the body, than the clothing. "Consider the ravens, that they neither sow nor reap; which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them! Of how much more value are ye than the birds!read more.
"And who of you, by being anxious, can add one cubit to his stature? If, therefore, ye cannot do the least thing, why are ye anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; and I say to you, even Solomon, in all his glory, was not arrayed as one of these! Now, if God so clotheth the grass in the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into an oven, how much more shall He clothe you, O ye of little faith! And seek ye not what ye shall eat, and what ye shall drink; nor be troubled with anxiety; for after all these things are the nations of the world seeking; and your Father knoweth that ye need these things. But seek ye His Kingdom, and these things shall be added to you.
Therefore, I say to you, be not anxious for your life, what ye may eat, or what ye may drink; nor for your body, what ye may put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? Behold the fowls of the heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into barns; and your Heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye much more valuable than they? And who of you, by being anxious, can add to his stature one cubit?read more.
And why are ye anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin; but I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as one of these. And, if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, that to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith! Be not, therefore, anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink!' or 'What shall we put on?' For after all these things the nations are seeking; for your Heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first His Kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. Be not, therefore, anxious for the morrow; for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its evil.
And, not many days after, gathering all things together, the younger son went abroad into a far country, and there wasted his estate, living riotously.
And He said also to His disciples, "There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and the same was accused to him as squandering his goods.
"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through, and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes, and where theives do not break through, nor steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Look, therefore, carefully, how ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise, buying up the opportunity, because the days are evil.
treasuring up for themselves a good foundation for the future, that they may lay hold on that which is really life.
but, after your hardness and impenitent heart, you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God, Who will render to every man according to his works;
to those who, by patience in well-doing, are seeking for glory and honor and incorruption, eternal life; but to those who are contentious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there shall be wrath and indignation, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that works evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;read more.
but glory and honor and peace to every one who works good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek:
Render to her, as she also rendered; and double the double according to her works; in the cup which she mixed, mix ye to her double. As much as she glorified herself, and lived luxuriously, so much torment and mourning give her; because she says in her heart, 'I sit a queen, and am not a widow, and shall in nowise see mourning.'
