they said this only to ensnare him, that they might have some accusation against him. but Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

then stooping down again, he wrote on the ground.

Pilate answered, what I have writ, I have writ.

then he made signs for a writing-book, and writ these words, "his name is John:" at which they were all surprized.
