The God of this people Israel chose our fathers; and He exalted the people in their sojourn in the land of Egypt; and, with a high arm, He led them forth out of it. And for about the time of forty years He bore them as a nursing father in the wilderness. And, having destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed by lot their land to them for about four hundred and fifty years.

But it is not as though the word of God has failed: for they are not all Israel, who are of Israel; neither, because they are Abraham's seed, are they all children; but, "In Isaac shall your seed be called." That is, the children of the flesh are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for a seed.

What, then? What Israel is seeking for, this he did not obtain; but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened; as it has been written, "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, unto this day."
