'Presumption' in the Bible
Now Eliab his oldest brother heard what he said to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David and he said, “Why have you come down here? With whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption (overconfidence) and the evil of your heart; for you have come down in order to see the battle.”
Then He declares to them [the true character of] their deedsAnd their transgressions, that they have acted arrogantly [with presumption and notions of self-sufficiency].
“Behold, I am against you, [O Babylon, you] arrogant one, [you who are pride and presumption personified],”Says the Lord God of hosts,“For your day has come,The time when I will punish you.
Out of one of them (Antiochus IV Epiphanes) came forth a rather small horn [but one of irreverent presumption and profane pride] which grew exceedingly powerful toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land (Israel).
But as it is, you boast [vainly] in your pretension and arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
