'Fasting' in the Bible
But now he [is] dead. Why [should I be] fasting? [Am] I able to return him again? I [am] going to him, but he cannot return to me."
When I heard these words, I sat and wept and mourned for days, and I was fasting and praying before the God of the heavens.
On the twenty-fourth day of this month the {Israelites} gathered in fasting, in sackcloths, and with soil on them.
In every province [each] place where the king's edict and his law came, there [was] great mourning for the Jews with fasting, crying, wailing, [and] sackcloth; and ashes were spread out as a bed for them.
But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing [was] sackcloth. I weakened my soul with fasting, and my prayer {returned to me unanswered}.
When I wept in the fasting of my soul, it became reproaches for me.
My knees {buckle} from fasting, and my body grows lean without fat.
Then the king went to his palace and spent the night in fasting, and no food was brought in before him and his sleep fled from him.
Then I turned my face to the Lord God to seek [him] [by] prayer and pleas for mercy, in fasting and [in] sackcloth and ashes.
"And even now," {declares} Yahweh, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, and weeping, and wailing."
