'Rod' in the Bible
For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.
Woe to Assyria, the rod of My angerAnd the staff in whose hands is My indignation,
Is the axe to boast itself over the one who chops with it?Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?That would be like a club wielding those who lift it,Or like a rod lifting him who is not wood.
Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts, “O My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear the Assyrian who strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did.
But with righteousness He will judge the poor,And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.
“Do not rejoice, O Philistia, all of you,Because the rod that struck you is broken; For from the serpent’s root a viper will come out,And its fruit will be a flying serpent.
For dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge,Nor is the cartwheel driven over cummin; But dill is beaten out with a rod, and cummin with a club.
For at the voice of the Lord Assyria will be terrified,When He strikes with the rod.
And every blow of the rod of punishment,Which the Lord will lay on him,Will be with the music of tambourines and lyres; And in battles, brandishing weapons, He will fight them.
