Abraham And Abimelech

1 And Abraham went on his way from there to the land of the South, and was living between Kadesh and Shur, in Gerar.

1 Now Abraham journeyed from (A)there toward the land of (B)the (a)Negev, and (b)settled between Kadesh and Shur; then he sojourned in (C)Gerar.

1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.

1 From there Abraham traveled to the region of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he lived in Gerar,(A)

1 Abraham traveled from there to the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was living in Gerar as an outsider,

2 And Abraham said of Sarah, his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent and took Sarah.

2 Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “(D)She is my sister.” So (E)Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

2 Abraham said about his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.”(B) So Abimelech king of Gerar had Sarah brought to him.

2 because Abraham kept saying about his wife Sarah, "She is my sister," King Abimelech of Gerar summoned them and took Sarah into his household.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream in the night, and said to him, Truly you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man's wife.

3 (F)But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, “Behold, (G)you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is (c)married.”

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “You are about to die because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”(a)

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream during the night and spoke to him, "Pay attention! You're about to die, because the woman you have taken is a man's wife!"

4 Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, Lord, will you put to death an upright nation?

4 Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, (H)will You slay a nation, even though (d)blameless?

4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?

4 Now Abimelech had not approached her, so he said, “Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?

4 Now Abimelech had not yet come near her, so he asked, "LORD, will you destroy an innocent nation?

5 Did he not say to me himself, She is my sister? and she herself said, He is my brother: with an upright heart and clean hands have I done this.

5 Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she (I)herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In (J)the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my (e)hands I have done this.”

5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.

5 Didn’t he himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I did this with a clear conscience(b) and clean(c) hands.”

5 Didn't he say to me, "She's my sister'? And she also said, "He's my brother.' I did this with pure intentions and clean hands."

6 And God said to him in the dream, I see that you have done this with an upright heart, and I have kept you from sinning against me: for this reason I did not let you come near her.

6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also (f)(K)kept you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience.(d) I have also kept you from sinning against Me. Therefore I have not let you touch her.

6 Then God replied to him in the dream, "I know that you did this with pure intentions, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore, I didn't allow you to touch her.

7 So now, give the man back his wife, for he is a prophet, and let him say a prayer for you, so your life may be safe: but if you do not give her back, be certain that death will come to you and all your house.

7 Now therefore, restore the man’s wife, for (L)he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet,(C) and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will certainly die, you and all who are yours.”

7 Now then, return the man's wife. As a matter of fact, he's a prophet and can intercede for you so you'll live. But if you don't return her, be aware that you and all who are yours will certainly die."

8 So Abimelech got up early in the morning and sent for all his servants and gave them word of these things, and they were full of fear.

8 So Abimelech arose early in the morning and called all his servants and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were greatly frightened.

8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.

8 Early in the morning Abimelech got up, called all his servants together, and personally(e) told them all these things, and the men were terrified.

8 So Abimelech got up early the next morning, summoned all his servants, and told them all these things. The men became terrified.

9 Then Abimelech sent for Abraham, and said, What have you done to us? what wrong have I done you that you have put on me and on my kingdom so great a sin? You have done to me things which are not to be done.

9 (M)Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And (g)how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom (N)a great sin? You have done to me (h)things that ought not to be done.”

9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

9 Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said to him, “What have you done to us? How did I sin against you that you have brought such enormous guilt on me and on my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.”(D)

9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked him, "What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, that you have brought such great sin against me and my kingdom? You've done things to me that ought not to have been done."

10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, Why did you do this thing?

10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What have you (i)encountered, that you have done this thing?”

10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?

10 Abimelech also said to Abraham, “What did you intend when you did this thing?”

10 Abimelech also asked Abraham, "What could you have been thinking when you did this?"

11 And Abraham said, Because it seemed to me that there was no fear of God in this place, and that they might put me to death because of my wife.

11 Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely there is no (O)fear of God in this place, and (P)they will kill me because of my wife.

11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.

11 Abraham replied, “I thought, ‘There is absolutely no fear of God in this place.(E) They will kill me because of my wife.’

11 "I thought that there's no fear of God in this place," Abraham replied, "and that they would kill me because of my wife.

12 And, in fact, she is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife:

12 Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife;

12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

12 Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.

12 Besides, she really is my sister she's my father's daughter, but not my mother's daughter so she could become my wife.

13 And when God sent me wandering from my father's house, I said to her, Let this be the sign of your love for me; wherever we go, say of me, He is my brother.

13 and it came about, when (Q)God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is (j)the kindness which you will show to me: (k)everywhere we go, (R)say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

13 So when God had me wander from my father’s house,(F) I said to her: Show your loyalty to me wherever we go and say about me: ‘He’s my brother.’”(G)

13 When God caused me to journey from my father's house, I asked her to do me this favor and say, "He's my brother.'"

14 Then Abimelech gave to Abraham sheep and oxen and men-servants and women-servants, and gave him back his wife Sarah.

14 (S)Abimelech then took sheep and oxen and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored his wife Sarah to him.

14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

14 Then Abimelech took sheep and cattle and male and female slaves, gave them to Abraham, and returned his wife Sarah to him.

14 So Abimelech took some sheep and oxen, and some male and female servants, gave them to Abraham, returned his wife Sarah to him,

15 And Abimelech said, See, all my land is before you; take whatever place seems good to you.

15 Abimelech said, “(T)Behold, my land is before you; (l)settle wherever (m)you please.”

15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

15 Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you.(H) Settle wherever you want.”(f)

15 and said, "Look! My land is available to you, so settle wherever you please."

16 And he said to Sarah, See, I have given to your brother a thousand bits of silver so that your wrong may be put right; now your honour is clear in the eyes of all.

16 To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your (U)brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, it is (n)your vindication before all who are with you, and before all men you are cleared.”

16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.

16 And he said to Sarah, “Look, I am giving your brother 1,000 pieces of silver. It is a verification of your honor(g) to all who are with you. You are fully vindicated.”

16 Abimelech also told Sarah, "Look! I am giving your brother 1,000 pieces of silver to vindicate you in the eyes of all who are with you. As a result, you will be completely vindicated."

17 Then Abraham made prayer to God, and God made Abimelech well again, and his wife and his women-servants, so that they had children.

17 (V)Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maids, so that they bore children.

17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.

17 Then Abraham prayed to God,(I) and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female slaves so that they could bear children,

17 Then Abraham interceded with God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants so they could bear children,

18 For the Lord had kept all the women of the house of Abimelech from having children, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.

18 (W)For the Lord had closed fast all the wombs of the household of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

18 for the Lord had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household on account of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

18 since the LORD had made all the women barren in Abimelech's household on account of Abraham's wife Sarah.
