then will I make to differ on that day, the land of Goshen wherein my people do dwell, so that there shall not be there a gad-fly! in order that thou mayest know, that I, Yahweh, am in the midst of the land;

And Yahweh did so, and brought a grievous gad-fly unto the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants and in all the land of Egypt, and the land was laid waste by reason of the gad-fly.

And Moses said: Lo! I, am going out from thee and will make entreaty unto Yahweh, so will he take away the gad-fly - from Pharaoh from his servants, and from his people tomorrow, - only let not Pharaoh again deceive, in not letting the people go, to sacrifice to Yahweh.

And Yahweh did according to the word of Moses, and took away the gad-fly, from Pharaoh from his servants and from his people, - there remained not, one.

Of the children of Gad, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.

Then the tribe of Gad: and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

The children of Gad after their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites: of Haggi, the family of the Haggites: of Shuni, the family of the Shunites:

These are the families of the children of Gad according to those that were numbered of them, forty thousand and five hundred.

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,

And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?

And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.

And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:

And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.

And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

And they journeyed from Iyim, and encamped in Dibon-gad.

And they journeyed from Dibon-gad, and encamped in Almon-diblathaim.

For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance:

"Of the land that we captured at that time, I've given its towns to the descendants of Reuben and the descendants of Gad from Aroer near the Wadi Arnon to half of the hill country of Gilead.

And I've given Gilead to the descendants of Reuben and the descendants of Gad as far as the Arnon Valley, designating the middle of the valley as its boundary, including up to the Jabbok River as a boundary with the Ammonites.

“Then I commanded you [Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh] at that time, saying, ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess; all you who are brave men shall cross over [the Jordan] armed before your brothers, the sons of Israel.

Bezer in the desert plain for the descendants of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead for the descendants of Gad, and Golan in Bashan for the descendants of Manasseh.

And these shall stand upon mount Ebal to curse; Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

We captured their land and handed it as an inheritance to the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.

Joshua told the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:

from mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and put them to death.

Moses, the servant of the LORD, and the Israelis defeated them. Then Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave it to the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh as their inheritance.

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel smote beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon even unto mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; and Joshua gave it unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the entrance of Hamath;

The descendants of Reuben and descendants of Gad, along with the other half-tribe of Manasseh, received their inherited portion that Moses the servant of the LORD had given them to the east beyond the Jordan River.

And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families.

This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.

And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

And to the sons of Kohath, those remaining from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and from the tribe of Gad, and from half the tribe of Manasseh, by lot, ten cities.

The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

Later, Joshua called together the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.

And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.

And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.

Meanwhile, Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had been severely oppressing the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben, gouging out their right eyes and not allowing Israel to have a deliverer. No one was left among the Israelis across the Jordan whose right eye Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had not gouged out. However, 7,000 men had escaped from the Ammonites and entered Jabesh-gilead.

And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.

from the Jordan River eastward, all the territory of Gilead, the descendants of Gad, the descendants of Reuben, and the descendants of Manasseh, from Aroer by the Valley of the Arnon, including Gilead and Bashan.

And the children of Gad dwelt over against them, in the land of Bashan unto Salchah:

The sons of Reuben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 warriors who could serve in the army—men who carried shield and sword, drew the bow, and were trained for war.

So the God of Israel incited King Pul of Assyria (also known as King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria), who took them prisoner and brought the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh to Halah, Habor, Hara, and to the Gozan River, where they remain to this day.

Unto the sons of Merari were given by lot, throughout their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

And out of the tribe of Gad; Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead; and the men of Gad killed them being born in the land, for they came down to take their cattle.

Mighty and experienced warriors from the descendants of Gad joined David at his wilderness stronghold. They were expert handlers of both shield and spear, with hardened looks and as agile as a gazelle on a mountain slope.

These were of the sons of Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand.

From the other side [east] of the Jordan River, of [the tribes of] Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 120,000 men, armed with all kinds of weapons of war for the battle.

So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

King David appointed Jerijah, his relatives, and 2,700 competent men who were each family heads, to oversee the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh regarding everything pertaining to God as well as matters relating to the king.

Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,

And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.

He sent among them, The gad-fly, and it devoured them, And the frog, and it despoiled them;

He spake, and there came in the gad-fly, Gnats, in all their bounds;

And day, day, they will seek me, and delight to know my way as a nation who did justice and forsook not the judgment of his God: they will ask me the judgments of justice, they will delight to draw near to Gad.

But ye who forsake Jehovah, who forget my holy mountain, who prepare a table for Gad, and fill up mixed wine unto Meni:

Why dost thou gad about so much, and change thy way? Thou shalt also be brought to shame by Egypt, as thou wast brought to shame by Assyria.

Egypt is a very fair heifer; the gad-fly cometh, it cometh from the north.

Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?

And he caused the Levites to stand in the house of Yahweh, with cymbals and with harps and with lyres, by the commandment of David, and of Gad the seer of the king, and of Nathan the prophet, - for, by the hand of Yahweh, came the commandment by the hand of his prophets.

Then said Gad the prophet unto David - Thou must not abide in the fortress, go and get thee into the land of Judah. So David departed, and entered the forest of Hereth.

And, when David arose in the morning, the word of Yahweh, had come unto Gad the prophet, the seer of David, saying:


Then came they near unto him, and said, Folds, for flocks, would we build for our cattle, here, - and cities for our little ones; but, we, would arm ourselves promptly, before the sons of Israel, until that we have brought them into their place, - so should our little ones remain in the fortified cities, because of the inhabitants of the land. We would not return unto our houses, - until the sons of Israel have possessed themselves each man, of his inheritance. read more.
For we would not inherit with them, over the Jordan, and onwards, - because our inheritance hath come unto us on this side the Jordan towards sunrise. And Moses said unto them, If ye will indeed do this thing, - if ye will arm yourselves, before Yahweh, for the war; and every armed man of you pass over the Jordan before Yahweh, - until he hath dispossessed his enemies, from before him; and the land be subdued before Yahweh then afterwards, shall ye return, and shall be acquitted by Yahweh and by Israel, - and this land shall be yours for a possession before Yahweh. But, if ye shall not do this, lo! ye will have sinned against Yahweh, - and take note of your sin, that it will find you out. Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your flocks, - and then that which hath gone forth from your mouth, ye shall do. Then spake the sons of Gad, and the sons of Reuben unto Moses, saying, - thy servants, will do, as, my lord, is giving command. Our little ones, our wives, our cattle, and all our beasts, shall remain there in the cities of Gilead; and thy servants, will pass over every one armed for war, before Yahweh to battle, - as, my lord is speaking. So Moses gave command concerning them, unto Eleazar the priest and unto Joshua son of Nun, and unto the headset the fathers of the tribes, of the sons of Israel; and Moses said unto them - If the sons of Gad and the son of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every one armed for the war before Yahweh, and the land be subdued before you, then shall ye give unto them the land of Gilead, for a possession. But, if they will not pass over armed, with you, then shall they accept a possession in your midst, in the land of Canaan. Then responded the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, saying, - That which Yahweh had spoken unto thy servants, so, will we do. We, will pass over armed, before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, - then shall be ours, the possession of our inheritance across the Jordan.

Also the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the hall tribe of Manasseh, passed over, armed, before the sons of Israel, - as Moses had spoken unto them: about forty thousand, equipped for the war, passed over before Yahweh, to battle, into the waste plains of Jericho.

Then, called Joshua - for the Reubenites, and for the Gadites, - and for the half tribe of Manasseh; and said unto them, Ye, have observed all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, - and have hearkened unto my voice, in all that I commanded you: ye have not forsaken your brethren, these many days, unto this day, - but have kept the charge of the commandment of Yahweh your God. read more.
Now, therefore, that Yahweh your God hath given rest unto your brethren, according as he spake unto them, - now, therefore, turn ye and get you to your homes within the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave unto you, over the Jordan. Only, take ye diligent heed, to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you - to love Yahweh your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, - and to serve him - with all your heart, and with all your soul. So Joshua blessed them, - and sent them away, and they took their journey unto their homes. Now, unto the one half tribe of Manesseh, had Moses given a possession in Bashan, and, unto the other half, did Joshua give possession with their brethren, over the Jordan, westward, - moreover also, when Joshua sent them away unto their homes, he blessed them, and spake unto them, saying - With much wealth, return ye unto your homes, even with very much cattle, with silver and with gold, and with copper and with iron, and with very much raiment, - divide ye the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

And, the sons of Gad, over against them, dwelt, in the land of Bashan, as far as Salecah:

the land which Yahweh smote before the assembly of Israel, a land for cattle, it is, - and, thy servants, have cattle. And they said - If we have found favour in thine eyes, let this land he given unto thy servants, for a possession, - do not take us over the Jordan.

And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites, gave I - from Gilead even as far as the ravine of Arnon, the middle of the ravine and boundary, - even as far as the Jabbok ravine, the boundary of the sons Ammon; the Waste Plain also and the Jordan and boundary, - from Chinnereth, even as far as the sea of the Waste Plain the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah, on the east.

and we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites, - and unto the half tribe of Manasseh.


And Gad came unto David, on that day, - and said unto him - Go up, rear thou unto Yahweh an altar, in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite. So David went up, according to the word of Gad, as Yahweh had commanded.

And, the messenger of Yahweh, commanded Gad, to say unto David, - that David should go up, to rear an altar unto Yahweh, in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite. So David went up, according to the word of Gad, which he spake in the name of Yahweh.


And, when David arose in the morning, the word of Yahweh, had come unto Gad the prophet, the seer of David, saying: Go and speak unto David - Thus, saith Yahweh, Three things, do I offer thee, - choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee. And David said unto Gad - I am in a great strait, - let us fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Yahweh, for, manifold, are, his compassions, but, into the hand of man, let me not fall.

Then spake Yahweh unto Gad, the seer of David saying: Go - and thou shalt speak unto David, saying, Thus, saith Yahweh, Three things, do I offer thee, - choose thee one from among them, that I may do it unto thee. So Gad came unto David, - and said to him, Thus, saith Yahweh, read more.
Choose thee: - Whether, for three years, there be famine, Or, for three months, that thou flee before thine adversaries, while the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee, Or, for three days, the sword of Yahweh, and pestilence be in the land, with, the messenger of Yahweh, laying waste throughout all the boundary of Israel, - Now, therefore, see, what, answer, I shall return unto him that sent me. And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait, - Oh let me fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Yahweh, for abounding are his compassions, exceedingly, but, into the hand of man, let me not fall.

And, of the Gadites, there separated themselves unto David, to the stronghold towards the desert, heroes of valour, men of war, for battle, men that could handle shield and spear, - and, faces of lions, were their faces, and, like gazelles upon the mountains, were they, for swiftness: Ezer, the chief, Obadiah, the second, - Eliab, the third; Mashmannah, the fourth, Jeremiah, the fifth; read more.
Attai, the sixth, Eliel the seventh; Johanan, the eighth, Elzabad, the ninth; Jeremiah, the tenth, Machbannai, the eleventh. These, were of the sons of Gad, chiefs of the host, - one to a hundred, the least, and, the greatest, to a thousand. These, are they who passed over the Jordan, in the first month, when, it, was full, over all its banks, - and they put to flight all them of the vales, to the east and to the west.

And, from over the Jordan, of the Reubenites and Gadites and half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of weapons of war for battle, a hundred and twenty thousand. All these, being men of war, expert in setting in battle-array, with a perfect heart, came to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel, - moreover also, all the rest of Israel, were of one heart to make David king.


Now, much cattle, had come into the possession of the sons of Reuben and of the sons of Gad, an exceeding mighty number. And when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, lo! the place, was a place for cattle.

and spake unto them, saying - With much wealth, return ye unto your homes, even with very much cattle, with silver and with gold, and with copper and with iron, and with very much raiment, - divide ye the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.


Of Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel;

Of the sons of Gad, in their pedigree - by their families by their ancestral houses, in the counting of names from twenty years old and upwards, every one able to go forth to war: such as were numbered of them as belonging to the tribe of Gad, forty-five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

Then the tribe of Gad, even the prince of the sons of Gad, Eliasaph son of Reuel;

All they who are num-bered to the camp of Reuben, - a hundred and fifty-one thousand and four hundred and fifty, by their hosts, and they in the second rank, shall set forward.
