When Herod the king heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

Then Herod, when he had secretly called the Magi, inquired of them strictly at what time the star, then visible, first made its appearance:

But when Herod heard of him, he said: John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead.

For Herod himself had sent and taken John, and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; for he had married her.

for Herod feared John, because he knew him to be a just and holy man; and he kept him in safety. And having heard him, he did many things, and heard him with pleasure.

And a suitable day having come, when Herod, on his birth day, made a supper for his great men, and his chief officers, and the first men of Galilee;

and the daughter of this Herodias having come in, and danced, and pleased Herod and his guests, the king said to the maiden: Ask me what you will, and I will give it to you.

And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took away his body, and laid it in a tomb.

And he answered and said to it: No more may any one ever eat fruit from you. And his disciples heard it.

And the scribes and the chief priests heard him; and they sought how they might destroy him; for they feared him, because all the multitude were astonished at his teaching.

For, verily I say to you, that whoever will say to this mountain, Be removed, and be cast into the sea, and will not doubt in his heart, but believe that what he says will come to pass, he shall have whatever he says.

And one of the scribes came, and heard them reasoning together; and perceiving that he had answered them well, he asked him: Which is the first commandment of all?

David himself, then, calls him Lord; and how is he his son? And the great multitude heard him with pleasure.

And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently deliver him up.

We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.

You have heard his impious speech. What think you? They all condemned him to be a subject of death.

And some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said: Behold, he calls for Elijah.

Afterward he appeared to the eleven as they reclined at table; and he reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
