When brethren dwell together and one of them dies and has no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry outside unto a stranger; her husband's brother shall go in unto her and take her to him to wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her. And it shall be that the firstborn which she bears shall be raised up in the name of his brother who is dead that his name be not blotted out of Israel. And if the man does not desire to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders and say, My husband's brother refuses to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother. read more.
Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak unto him, and if he stands and says, I desire not to take her; then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders and loose his shoe from off his foot and spit in his face and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house. And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that is barefoot.

saying, Master, Moses said, If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up seed unto his brother.

Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother dies and leaves his wife behind him and leaves no children, that his brother should take his wife and raise up seed unto his brother.

saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, that his brother should take his wife and raise up seed unto his brother.


Then Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother; and he sought where to weep, and he entered into his chamber and wept there. And he washed his face and went out and refrained himself and said, Serve bread. And they served for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, who ate with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians may not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. read more.
And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men marvelled one at another. And he took and sent portions unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were drunk with him.

Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all those that stood by him, and he cried, Cause everyone to go out from me. And no one stood with him while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren. And he wept aloud; and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; does my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him, for they were terrified at his presence. read more.
Then Joseph said unto his brethren, Now come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves that ye sold me here, for God sent me before you for life.

And Joseph said unto them, Fear not; for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God thought it out unto good, to bring to pass that which we see this day, to give life to many people. Now therefore fear ye not; I will nourish you and your little ones. Thus he comforted them and spoke to their heart. read more.
And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. And Joseph saw Ephraim's sons unto the third generation; the sons also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were brought up upon Joseph's knees. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; but God will surely visit you and bring you out of this land unto the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. And Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from here.


I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me; thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

And he laid his carcase in his own grave, and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

Now these men took this as a good omen and quickly took this word from his mouth, and they said, Thy brother Benhadad! And he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Benhadad came forth to him, and he caused him to come up into the chariot.


For surely your blood which is your souls I will require; at the hand of every animal I will require it and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother I will require the soul (or life) of man.


Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.




O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; and I should not be despised.


Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother; thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian because thou wast a stranger in his land.

And the sons of Israel repented because of Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

When Reuben heard it, he delivered him out of their hands and said, Let us not kill him. And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood but cast him into this cistern that is in the wilderness and lay no hand upon him that he might rid him out of their hands to deliver him to his father again.




that I commanded my brother Hanani, and Hananiah, the prince of the palace in Jerusalem (for he was as a man of truth and feared God above many);

Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?


But I saw none of the other apostles, except James the Lord's brother.
