“But He knows the way that I take [and He pays attention to it].
When He has tried me, I will come forth as [refined] gold [pure and luminous].
For You have tested us, O God;
You have refined us as silver is refined.

“And I will bring the third part through the fire,
Refine them as silver is refined,
And test them as gold is tested.
They will call on My name,
And I will listen and answer them;

And they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’”
He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi [the priests], and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the Lord [grain] offerings in righteousness.

“My fruit is better than gold, even pure gold,
And my yield is better than choicest silver.
“If I have put my trust and confidence in gold,
Or have declared fine gold my hope and assurance,

And each is tested by the praise given to him [and his response to it, whether humble or proud].

The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
But the Lord tests hearts.
But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel [that tells the good news of salvation through faith in Christ], so we speak, not as [if we were trying] to please people [to gain power and popularity], but to please God who examines our hearts [expecting our best].
But You, O Lord, know me [and understand my devotion to You];
You see me;
And You examine the attitude of my heart toward You.
Drag out the faithless like sheep for the slaughter [O Lord]
And set them apart for the day of slaughter.
But, O Lord of hosts, You who examine the righteous,
Who see the heart and the mind,

For the righteous God tries the hearts and minds.

Are burning lips [murmuring manipulative words] and a wicked heart.
Son of man, the house of Israel has become to Me scum and waste matter. All of them are bronze and tin and iron and lead in the midst of the furnace; they are the dross of silver. Yes, I will gather you and blow upon you with the fire of My wrath, and you shall be melted in the midst of it. As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall you be melted in the midst of it, and you shall know, understand, and realize that I the Lord have poured out My wrath upon you [O Israel].

The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]? The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord's throne is in heaven. His eyes behold; His eyelids test and prove the children of men. The Lord tests and proves the [unyieldingly] righteous, but His soul abhors the wicked and him who loves violence.
