For zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And the [mocking] insults of those who insult You have fallen on me.


They set a net for my steps;
My very life was bowed down.
They dug a pit before me;
Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. Selah.


My life is among lions;
I must lie among those who breathe out fire—
The sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.


They consult only to throw him down from his high position [to dishonor him];
They delight in lies.
They bless with [the words of] their mouths,
But inwardly they curse. Selah.


All day long they twist my words and say hurtful things;
All their thoughts are against me for evil.


Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would destroy me are powerful, being my enemies wrongfully;
I am forced to restore what I did not steal.


For my enemies have spoken against me;
Those who watch for my life have consulted together,


My enemies taunt me all day long;
Those who ridicule me use my name as a curse.

For the mouths of the wicked and the mouth of deceit are opened against me; they have spoken to me and against me with lying tongues. They have compassed me about also with words of hatred and have fought against me without a cause. In return for my love they are my adversaries, but I resort to prayer. read more.
And they have rewarded and laid upon me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

Many a time and much have they afflicted me from my youth up -- "let Israel now say -- " Many a time and much have they afflicted me from my youth up, yet they have not prevailed against me. The plowers plowed upon my back; they made long their furrows.



For innumerable evils have encompassed me;
My sins have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see.
They are more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my heart has failed me.

This is what the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, Israel’s Holy One says,
To the thoroughly despised One,
To the One hated by the nation
To the Servant of rulers,
Kings will see and arise,
Princes shall also bow down,
Because of the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You.”

For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written [in Scripture], “The reproaches of those who reproached You (the Father) fell on Me (the Son).”

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck [they threaten my life]. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, where the floods overwhelm me. I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; my eyes fail with waiting [hopefully] for my God. read more.

I am [forced] to restore what I did not steal. O God, You know my folly and blundering; my sins and my guilt are not hidden from You. Let not those who wait and hope and look for You, O Lord of hosts, be put to shame through me; let not those who seek and inquire for and require You [as their vital necessity] be brought to confusion and dishonor through me, O God of Israel. Because for Your sake I have borne taunt and reproach; confusion and shame have covered my face. I have become a stranger to my brethren, and an alien to my mother's children. For zeal for Your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches and insults of those who reproach and insult You have fallen upon me.
