Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power that the Lord gave me to enlightenment and not to destruction.

The idea pleased the whole congregation. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch, whom they set before the apostles. After they prayed, they laid their hands on them.

When they had ordained elders in every congregation they prayed with fasting. They commended them to God, on whom they believed.

We did not try to get praise from anyone, either from you or from others, even though as apostles of Christ we could have made demands on you.

You may remember, brothers, our labor and hardship. We worked day and night that we would not burden any of you when we preached the good news of God to you.

Or did I commit a sin in abasing myself that you might be exalted, because I preached to you the good news of God without charge? I robbed other congregations, taking pay from them that I might minister to you. When I was present with you and was in want, I was not a burden on any man. For the brothers, when they came from Macedonia, supplied the measure of my want; and in everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so I will continue to do the same.
