it is the action of the mind that vivifies, that of the body profits nothing: the words that I have delivered to you, spiritually understood, give life. but there are some of you who do not believe. Jesus perform'd many other miracles in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Messias, the son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name.

and that from your infancy you were acquainted with the sacred writings, which point you the way to salvation, by believing in Christ Jesus:

But how, say you, shall they call on him on whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach except they be sent? as it is written, "how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" 'tis true, faith comes by preaching, and preaching is by the divine appointment.read more.
but all do not obey the gospel. for Esaias saith, "Lord, who hath believed our report?"

he came as a witness, to represent what he knew of the light, that by his means all might be convinc'd.

and many more believed, for having heard him speak himself: and said to the woman, now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ.

neither pray I for these alone, but for those also who shall believe on me through their preaching.
