for as there are many members in one and the same body, but all the members have not the same office:

so we who are many, make all but one body in Christ, and every member subservient to one another.

For as the body is one, tho' it has many members, and all the members of that one body, tho' many, are one body: so also is the body of Christ.

or indeed that we may have mutual consolation from the faith which is in common to you and to me.

for there must be factions among you, whereby it will appear who among you are the approved.

Now I say, that the heir, as long as he is a child, is in a state of servitude, tho' he is to be lord of all;

and there are different offices, but the same Lord.

other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring; they will hear my voice; and so there shall be but one fold, and one pastor.

having then different gifts, according to the respective favour bestowed upon us; if it be prophecy, let him prophesy according to the proportion of his gift.

the glory of the sun is of one kind, the glory of the moon of another, and the glory of the stars still different; nay, one star differs from another star in glory.

Now there are different gifts, but the same spirit.

there are celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is of one kind, and the glory of the terrestrial of another.

if he that is come to you, preaches another Jesus whom I have not preached, or if ye receive other gifts of the spirit, than what ye have received from me, or another gospel, than what you have accepted, you might well bear with his pretensions:

and there are different operations, but it is the same God who performs them all in every one.

All flesh is not of the same kind: but there is one kind that belongs to men, another to beasts, another to fishes, and another to birds.

Love not the world, nor let worldly things engage your affections. he that is worldly affected is a stranger to divine love.

Let us therefore, who have been instructed, have this in view: and if you are sollicitous about any thing else, God will reveal even that unto you.

And even inanimate instruments of sound, whether pipe or harp, except they have a distinct variety of notes, how can they express any significant tune?

In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him.

if you return one kind office by another, where's the obligation? the heathen themselves do as much.

my dear children, let not our love be only in the language of our lips, but in the real effects of the heart.

Thus you are the body of Christ, being the particular members of it.

for who has distinguish'd thee above another? or what have you, that you did not receive? now if you did receive it, why do you glory as if you had not received it?

thus, tho' there are many members, yet there is but one body.

Now faith is the foundation of our hopes of happiness, and the persuasion we have about things not evident to our senses.

I wish I could be present this very moment with you, and suit my discourse accordingly, for I stand in doubt what to think of you.

but it must not be so among you: on the contrary, whoever would rise among you, let him be your minister.
