be you then entirely upon the watch: be insensible to toil: perform the work of an evangelist, and discharge your ministerial function.

bravely endure hardships, like a soldier of Jesus Christ.

for I will make him see how much he must suffer for my name.

for it is a favour bestowed upon you, that you not only believe on Christ, but suffer also for his sake,

and he that does not take his cross, and so follow after me, is unworthy of me.

be not therefore asham'd of the testimony of the Lord, nor of me who am a prisoner upon his account. but share with me in the afflictions, which attend the gospel, supported as you are by the power of God,

so that if one member suffer, they all suffer with it: or if one be honoured, they partake of it.

but having no root in him he has only an occasional faith: for as soon as any oppression or persecution arises upon account of the gospel, he presently relapses.

then shall they deliver you up to torments, and to death: and ye shall be hated by all nations upon my account.

save what the holy spirit in every city declares, "that bonds and afflictions wait for me."

Thus, my brethren, your conduct has given us great consolation, under all our persecutions and distress.

This it is that fills you with joy, notwithstanding the various tryals, which still necessarily afflict you,

but even to the morose. for it is a recommendation to the divine favour, to suffer unjust persecution

However, if you suffer in the cause of virtue, it is your happiness: and instead of being over-awed by their threats, and struck with concern,

for since it is the will of heaven you should suffer, it is better you should suffer for your virtue, than for any crimes.

take care therefore not to suffer upon the account of homicide, or thievery, or for any criminal, or pragmatical practices. but whoever suffers as a christian, let him not be asham'd, but rather give thanks to God upon that account. for now is the time when God will begin his judgments with his own church. now if he begins with us, what will the conclusion be to those who do not obey the divine gospel?

let those then, whom God calls to sufferings, by virtue recommend their souls to him, as to a creator, who will make good his promise.

but may the all-gracious God, who has called us to eternal glory, perfect, confirm, fortify, and settle you, during the short interval of your sufferings.

from a principle of conscience. what glory is there in suffering corporal punishment for real offences? but if you meet with ill usage for doing your duty, and bear it with constancy,

and not only so, but we triumph in tribulation also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, probation;

but in all things I approve myself as the minister of God, by great constancy in afflictions, in torments, in distresses, from stripes,

I am press'd on every side, yet not crush'd; perplexed, but not in despair;

for the light affliction, which I at present suffer, will be infinitely over-ballanced by an eternal weight of glory;

and the hopes I had of you continue still the same, knowing that as you have had your share of suffering, so you will likewise have of consolation.
