Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?

Have you not read this Scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone;

But he looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone'?

He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which has become the chief cornerstone.

For it stands in scripture: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame." To you therefore who believe, this is precious, but for those who do not believe, "The very stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,"

[And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder."]

Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder."

Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone that will make men stumble, and a rock that will make them fall; and he who believes in him will not be put to shame."

As you come to him, the living Stone rejected by men but chosen and precious in the sight of God you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. To you therefore who believe, this is precious, but for those who do not believe, "The very stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone," and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall;" they stumble because they disobey the wordas they were desstined to do.
