You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for God's own possession, that you may show the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Jehovah said to Abram: Leave your country, your people, and your father's household, and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you. I will curse whoever curses you. All the people on earth will be blessed through you.
You will be my kingdom of priests and my holy nation. These are the words you must speak to the children of Israel.'
It is not as if the word of God failed. Not all who come from Israel are really Israel. It is not because they are Abraham's that they are all children, but: What will be called 'your seed' will be through Isaac. (Genesis 21:12) That is, the children of the flesh are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as seed.
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens. You are fellow citizens with the holy ones and of the household of God.
Death came because of what one man did. The resurrection of the dead also comes because of what one man did. In Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
He said to Adam: Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you. You will eat the plants of the field. You will eat your food by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground. You came from the ground. For dust you are and to dust you will return.
Therefore, through one-man sin entered into the world, and death through sin. So death passed to all men, for all have sinned. Until the law sin was in the world. Sin is not imputed (put on account) when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even for those who had not sinned after the likeness of Adam's transgression. But the two are not the same, because God's gift (spiritual endowment) is not like Adam's sin. It is true that many people died because of the sin of that one man. But God's grace is much greater, and so is his gift to so many people through the loving-kindness of the one man, Jesus Christ. And there is a difference between God's gift (spiritual endowment) and the sin of one man. After the one sin, came the guilty judgment; but after so many sins, comes the undeserved gift of righteousness. It was by the transgression of the one that death ruled as king through that one. Even more so shall those who receive the abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteousness, rule as kings in life by the one, Jesus Christ. The result of one trespass was condemnation for all men. The result of righteousness was justification (acquittal), which brings life for all men. Through the disobedience of one man many have been made sinners. Yet through the obedience of one man many will be made righteous. The law came that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased God's loving kindness increased even more.
In hope against hope Abraham believed that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken: So your descendants will be. Not being weak in faith he considered his own body now as good as dead (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb. Yet, he looked to the promise of God. He did not waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith. He gave the glory to God!read more.
He was fully assured that what he had promised, he was able to perform. It was counted to him as righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was counted to him. It is also for our sake, to whom it shall be counted, who believe in him that raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification (acquittal).
He believed in Jehovah. Jehovah considered Abram's faith as his righteousness.
Abraham believed God and Jehovah considered his faith as his righteousness. (Genesis 15:6) You know that those who have faith are sons of Abraham. The Scripture revealed ahead of time, that God justified the people of the nations by faith. He preached the good news beforehand to Abraham. He said: In you will all the nations be blessed.read more.
So then those who have faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.
Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him. Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything to him. He was first of all, by translation of his name, King of Righteousness, and then he was also ruler of Salem, which means, King of Peace. He was without father or mother or genealogy, and neither had beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God, he continues as a priest forever.
As soon as the king of Sodom returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, he went out to meet Abram at the King's Valley of Shaveh. King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. He blessed him and said: Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth.read more.
Blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand! Abram gave him one tenth of everything.
Jehovah has taken an oath and will not change his mind: You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
If perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood, for under it the people received the Law, what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, instead of one named after the order of Aaron? The priesthood was changed, and therefore it is necessary to also change the Law. The one about whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.read more.
It is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests. This is clear if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, He would become such, not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. It is written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman, and one by the freewoman. How is it that the son by the slave woman is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise? This contains an allegory (symbolic drama). These women symbolize two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.read more.
Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia. She corresponds to the Jerusalem that now is. She is in bondage with her children. The Jerusalem above is free. She is our mother.
Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. She had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar. She said to Abram: Jehovah has kept me from having children. Go sleep with my maidservant. Perhaps I can build a family through her. Abram agreed to what Sarai said. After Abram lived in Canaan ten years, Sarai, his wife, gave her Egyptian maidservant Hagar to her husband to be his wife.read more.
Abram had intercourse with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram: You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms; she knows she is pregnant and she despises me. May Jehovah judge between you and me. Your servant is in your hands, Abram said. Do with her whatever you think best. Then Sarai mistreated Hagar. So she ran away from her.
It is written, Rejoice, barren woman who does not give birth. Break forth and cry, you who do not labor; for there are more children of the desolate than of the one who has the husband. Brothers, we are children who belong to the promise, the same as Isaac was. Just like then, the son who was conceived in a natural way according to the flesh persecuted the son conceived in a spiritual way. That is exactly what is happening now!read more.
What do the scriptures say? Throw out the slave woman and her son. For the son of the slave woman must not share the inheritance with the son of the free woman. (Genesis 21:10) Brothers, we are not children of a slave woman but of the free woman.
You will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son. You will call his name Jesus. He will be great. He will be called the Son of the Most High. Jehovah God will give him the throne of his father David. (Isaiah 11:1-10) He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will not end.

But I will not take my loving kindness away from him or allow my truth to become perverted. I will not dishonor my promise or alter my own agreement. On my holiness I have taken an oath: I will not lie to David. His descendants will last forever. His throne will be in my presence like the sun. It shall be established forever like the moon. It will be like a faithful witness in heaven.
I do not speak about all of you. I know whom I have chosen! This way the scripture may be fulfilled: 'He that eats my bread lifted up his heel against me.'
Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
I Jesus have sent my angel to tell you about these things in the congregations. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.'
The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and condemn it. She came from the ends of the earth to hear the Wisdom of Solomon. Someone greater than Solomon is here!
That night Jehovah appeared to him in a dream and asked him: What do you want me to give you? Solomon answered: You always showed great love for my father David, your servant. He was good, loyal, and honest in his relation with you. You have continued to show him your great and constant love by giving him a son who today rules in his place. O Jehovah God, you allowed me to succeed my father as king, even though I am very young and do not know how to rule.read more.
I am among the people you have chosen to be your own. They are a people who are so many that they cannot be counted. Give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice. Help me know the difference between good and evil. Otherwise, how would I ever be able to rule this great people of yours? Jehovah was pleased that Solomon asked for this. He said to him: Because you have asked for the wisdom to rule justly, instead of long life for yourself or riches or the death of your enemies, I will do what you have asked. I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had. There has never been nor will ever be anyone like you.
