But the promises were made to Abraham and "to his offspring." He doth not say, "and to offsprings," as speaking of many, but, as speaking of one, "and to thy offspring," which is Christ.

And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be registered.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this manner. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swathingclothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Now all this took place, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel;" that is, when interpreted, Godis withus.
Now when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, lo! there came magians from the East to Jerusalem,
And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary who had been betrothed to him, who was with child. And it came to pass, while they were there, that the days for her delivery were completed.
Now when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, lo! there came magians from the East to Jerusalem, saying, Where is the king of the Jews that hath been born? for we saw his star in the East, and came to do him homage. But when Herod the king heard of these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;read more.
and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written by the prophet: "And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, art by no means least among the princes of Judah; for out of thee shall come a ruler, who shall feed my people Israel." Then Herod, having privately called the magians ascertained from them exactly the time when the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search carefully for the child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may go and do him homage. When they had heard the king, they departed. And lo! the star, which they had seen in the East, went before them, till it came and stood over where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy; and when they had come into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and did homage to him; and opening their treasures, they presented him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
Then Herod, when he saw that he had been deceived by the magians, was greatly enraged; and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the magians. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping, and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they were no more."
and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "I called my son out of Egypt."
And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.
And Jesus, as soon as he was baptized, went up from the water; and, lo! the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God, descending like a dove, coming upon him.
relating to Jesus of Nazareth, that God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were overpowered by the Devil; for God was with him.

And there was delivered to him the book of the prophet Isaiah; and unrolling the book, he found the place where it was written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to preach glad tidings to the poor; he hath sent me to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty the oppressed,read more.
to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And rolling up the book, he gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed upon him. And he began to say to them, Today hath this scripture been fulfilled in your ears.
Now when Jesus heard that John had been cast into prison, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazara, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, on the shore of the lake, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,read more.
"The land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the lake beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people that sat in darkness, saw a great light; and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light arose."
And when they drew near to Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, Go m the village over against you, and immediately ye will find an ass tied, and a colt with her; loose and bring them to me. And if any one say aught to you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and he will immediately send them.read more.
Now this took place, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, "Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy king cometh to thee, meek, and riding on an ass, and on a colt the foal of a beast of burden."
And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all those who sold and bought in the temple, and overturned the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of those who sold the doves;
And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord! now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word;read more.
for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all the peoples; a light to enlighten the gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
And the passover of the Jews was near; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And he found in the temple those who sold oxen, and sheep, and doves, and the moneychangers sitting. And having made a scourge of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and poured out the money of the exchangers, and overthrew the tables;read more.

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judah, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they took offence at him.

And Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John what ye hear and see. The blind receive sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and to the poor good tidings are brought; and blessed is he, whoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.
Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What are we to do, seeing that this man worketh many signs?
For Christ did not seek his own pleasure, but, as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me."
Why? Because they did not strive for it by faith, but as being by works. For they stumbled against the stone of stumbling;
and "a stone of stumbling, and a rock to strike against;" even to those who stumble, being disobedient to the word; to which they were also appointed.
If I had not done among them the works which no other man hath done, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their Law: "They hated me without a cause."
Jesus saith to them, Did ye never read in the Scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected, the same hath become the cornerstone; from the Lord did this come, and it is marvelous in our eyes?"
And Herod and Pilate on that day became friends with each other; for they had before been at enmity.
For in truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, did both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the gentiles, and the peoples of Israel, assemble in this city,
I speak not of you all; I know whom I chose; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lifted up his heel against me."
Then Jesus saith to them, This night will all of you fall away from me; for it is written, "I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered."
and said, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him up to you? And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.
And they consulted together, and bought with them the potters field, for a burialplace for strangers.
saying, Father, if thou art willing to remove this cup from meyet not my will, but thine be done!
