The Spirit is that which makes alive; the flesh profits nothing; the words which I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
The birth of Christ was thus. His mother Mary having been espoused to Joseph, before they came together, was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus answered, I tell you most truly, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is a spirit. Wonder not that I said to you, You must be born again. The Spirit breathes where it wills, and you hear its voice, but you know not whence it comes, nor whither it goes; so is every one that has been born of the Spirit.

And on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any one thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He that believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of him shall flow rivers of living water. But he said this of the Spirit which those believing in him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet [given], because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. The woman said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; whence then have you the living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and who drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?read more.
Jesus answered and said to her, Every one that drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water which I will give him shall never thirst; but the water which I will give him shall be in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.
And he showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and the Lamb. In the midst of its broad plain and along the river on each side was the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, and yielding monthly each of its fruits, and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
