'Us' in the Bible
Unless the Lord of hostsHad left us a few survivors,We would be like Sodom,We would be like Gomorrah.
“Come now, and let us reason together,”Says the Lord,“Though your sins are as scarlet,They will be as white as snow;Though they are red like crimson,They will be like wool.
And many peoples will come and say,“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,To the house of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us concerning His waysAnd that we may walk in His paths.”For the law will go forth from ZionAnd the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
Come, house of Jacob, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.
For seven women will take hold of one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; take away our reproach!”
Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
“Let us go up against Judah and terrorize it, and make for ourselves a breach in its walls and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,”
“Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted;State a proposal, but it will not stand,For God is with us.”
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
“Even the cypress trees rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying,‘Since you were laid low, no tree cutter comes up against us.’
“They will all respond and say to you,‘Even you have been made weak as we,You have become like us.
“Give us advice, make a decision;Cast your shadow like night at high noon;Hide the outcasts, do not betray the fugitive.
At evening time, behold, there is terror! Before morning they are no more.Such will be the portion of those who plunder usAnd the lot of those who pillage us.
Instead, there is gaiety and gladness,Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep,Eating of meat and drinking of wine:“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”
And it will be said in that day,“Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us.This is the Lord for whom we have waited;Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
Lord, You will establish peace for us,Since You have also performed for us all our works.
O Lord our God, other masters besides You have ruled us;But through You alone we confess Your name.
Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,And with Sheol we have made a pact. The overwhelming scourge will not reach us when it passes by,For we have made falsehood our refuge and we have concealed ourselves with deception.”
Woe to those who deeply hide their plans from the Lord,And whose deeds are done in a dark place,And they say, “Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”
Who say to the seers, “You must not see visions”;And to the prophets, “You must not prophesy to us what is right,Speak to us pleasant words,Prophesy illusions.
“Get out of the way, turn aside from the path,Let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.”
Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,And the wilderness becomes a fertile field,And the fertile field is considered as a forest.
O Lord, be gracious to us; we have waited for You.Be their strength every morning,Our salvation also in the time of distress.
Sinners in Zion are terrified;Trembling has seized the godless.“Who among us can live with the consuming fire?Who among us can live with continual burning?”
But there the majestic One, the Lord, will be for usA place of rivers and wide canalsOn which no boat with oars will go,And on which no mighty ship will pass—
For the Lord is our judge,The Lord is our lawgiver,The Lord is our king;He will save us—
Then Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Speak now to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak with us in Judean in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us, this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”
Beware that Hezekiah does not mislead you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
Now, O Lord our God, deliver us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, Lord, are God.”
“Coastlands, listen to Me in silence,And let the peoples gain new strength;Let them come forward, then let them speak;Let us come together for judgment.
Let them bring forth and declare to us what is going to take place;As for the former events, declare what they were,That we may consider them and know their outcome.Or announce to us what is coming;
Declare the things that are going to come afterward,That we may know that you are gods;Indeed, do good or evil, that we may anxiously look about us and fear together.
All the nations have gathered togetherSo that the peoples may be assembled.Who among them can declare thisAnd proclaim to us the former things?Let them present their witnesses that they may be justified,Or let them hear and say, “It is true.”
“Put Me in remembrance, let us argue our case together;State your cause, that you may be proved right.
He who vindicates Me is near;Who will contend with Me?Let us stand up to each other;Who has a case against Me?Let him draw near to Me.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,Each of us has turned to his own way;But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us allTo fall on Him.
“Come,” they say, “let us get wine, and let us drink heavily of strong drink; And tomorrow will be like today, only more so.”
Therefore justice is far from us,And righteousness does not overtake us;We hope for light, but behold, darkness,For brightness, but we walk in gloom.
All of us growl like bears,And moan sadly like doves; We hope for justice, but there is none,For salvation, but it is far from us.
For our transgressions are multiplied before You,And our sins testify against us;For our transgressions are with us,And we know our iniquities:
I shall make mention of the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, the praises of the Lord,According to all that the Lord has granted us,And the great goodness toward the house of Israel,Which He has granted them according to His compassionAnd according to the abundance of His lovingkindnesses.
For You are our Father, though Abraham does not know usAnd Israel does not recognize us.You, O Lord, are our Father,Our Redeemer from of old is Your name.
Why, O Lord, do You cause us to stray from Your waysAnd harden our heart from fearing You?Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.
For all of us have become like one who is unclean,And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf,And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
There is no one who calls on Your name,Who arouses himself to take hold of You;For You have hidden Your face from usAnd have delivered us into the power of our iniquities.
But now, O Lord, You are our Father,We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.
Do not be angry beyond measure, O Lord,Nor remember iniquity forever;Behold, look now, all of us are Your people.
Will You restrain Yourself at these things, O Lord? Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?
