'Vengeance' in the Bible
So the Lord said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one finding him would slay him.
If, however, he survives a day or two, no vengeance shall be taken; for he is his property.
You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.
I will also bring upon you a sword which will execute vengeance for the covenant; and when you gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you, so that you shall be delivered into enemy hands.
“Take full vengeance for the sons of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people.”
Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the Lord’s vengeance on Midian.
‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,In due time their foot will slip;For the day of their calamity is near,And the impending things are hastening upon them.’
If I sharpen My flashing sword,And My hand takes hold on justice,I will render vengeance on My adversaries,And I will repay those who hate Me.
“Rejoice, O nations, with His people;For He will avenge the blood of His servants,And will render vengeance on His adversaries,And will atone for His land and His people.”
Saul then said, “Thus you shall say to David, ‘The king does not desire any dowry except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
Then they brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron and said to the king, “Behold, the head of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life; thus the Lord has given my lord the king vengeance this day on Saul and his descendants.”
The God who executes vengeance for me,And brings down peoples under me,
The God who executes vengeance for me,And subdues peoples under me.
The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance;He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”Let there be known among the nations in our sight,Vengeance for the blood of Your servants which has been shed.
O Lord, God of vengeance,God of vengeance, shine forth!
To execute vengeance on the nationsAnd punishment on the peoples,
For jealousy enrages a man,And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
For the Lord has a day of vengeance,A year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
Say to those with anxious heart,“Take courage, fear not.Behold, your God will come with vengeance;The recompense of God will come,But He will save you.”
“Your nakedness will be uncovered,Your shame also will be exposed;I will take vengeance and will not spare a man.”
He put on righteousness like a breastplate,And a helmet of salvation on His head;And He put on garments of vengeance for clothingAnd wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.
To proclaim the favorable year of the LordAnd the day of vengeance of our God;To comfort all who mourn,
“For the day of vengeance was in My heart,And My year of redemption has come.
But, O Lord of hosts, who judges righteously,Who tries the feelings and the heart,Let me see Your vengeance on them,For to You have I committed my cause.
You who know, O Lord,Remember me, take notice of me,And take vengeance for me on my persecutors.Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away;Know that for Your sake I endure reproach.
Yet, O Lord of hosts, You who test the righteous,Who see the mind and the heart;Let me see Your vengeance on them;For to You I have set forth my cause.
For that day belongs to the Lord God of hosts,A day of vengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His foes;And the sword will devour and be satiatedAnd drink its fill of their blood;For there will be a slaughter for the Lord God of hosts,In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.
“Raise your battle cry against her on every side!She has given herself up, her pillars have fallen,Her walls have been torn down.For this is the vengeance of the Lord:Take vengeance on her;As she has done to others, so do to her.
There is a sound of fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon,To declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God,Vengeance for His temple.
Flee from the midst of Babylon,And each of you save his life!Do not be destroyed in her punishment,For this is the Lord’s time of vengeance;He is going to render recompense to her.
Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers!The Lord has aroused the spirit of the kings of the Medes,Because His purpose is against Babylon to destroy it;For it is the vengeance of the Lord, vengeance for His temple.
Therefore thus says the Lord,“Behold, I am going to plead your caseAnd exact full vengeance for you;And I will dry up her seaAnd make her fountain dry.
You have seen all their vengeance,All their schemes against me.
“That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance,I have put her blood on the bare rock,That it may not be covered.”
‘Thus says the Lord God, “Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has incurred grievous guilt, and avenged themselves upon them,”
I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom according to My anger and according to My wrath; thus they will know My vengeance,” declares the Lord God.
‘Thus says the Lord God, “Because the Philistines have acted in revenge and have taken vengeance with scorn of soul to destroy with everlasting enmity,”
I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes; and they will know that I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance on them.”’”
“And I will execute vengeance in anger and wrathOn the nations which have not obeyed.”
A jealous and avenging God is the Lord;The Lord is avenging and wrathful.The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries,And He reserves wrath for His enemies.
because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled.
And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended him and took vengeance for the oppressed by striking down the Egyptian.
Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”
