'Wasted' in the Bible
“Nevertheless the Kenites will be consumed.How long will Asshur (Assyria) keep you (Israel) captive?”
‘They will be wasted by hunger, and consumed by plagueAnd a bitter destruction;And I will send the teeth of beasts against them,With the venom of crawling things of the dust.
For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, and they would come in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were innumerable. So they came into the land to devastate it.
“My eye has grown dim (unexpressive) because of grief,And all my [body’s] members are [wasted away] like a shadow.
“His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen,And his bones which were not seen now stick out.
For my life is spent with sorrowAnd my years with sighing;My strength has failed because of my iniquity,And even my body has wasted away.
When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted awayThrough my groaning all the day long.
For there they who took us captive demanded of us a song with words,And our tormentors [who made a mockery of us demanded] amusement, saying,“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”
The morsel which you have eaten you will vomit up,And you will waste your compliments.
The waters from the sea will dry up,And the river will be parched and dry.
The city of chaos is broken down;Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.
Therefore My wrath and My anger were poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; so they have become a ruin and a desolation, as it is this day.
“O vines of Sibmah, I will weep for youMore than the weeping of Jazer [over its ruins and wasted vineyards].Your tendrils [of influence] stretched across the sea,Reaching [even] to the sea of Jazer.The destroyer has fallenOn your summer fruits and your [season’s] crop of grapes.
[And as for us,] yet our eyes failed,Looking in vain for help.Watching [from the towers] we watchedFor a nation that could not save.
“And they will be desolateIn the midst of countries that are desolated;And her cities will beAmong cities that are devastated [by plunder and slavery].
Therefore an uproar will arise among your people,And all your fortresses will be destroyed,As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,When mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
But there were some who were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted?
A few days later, the younger son gathered together everything [that he had] and traveled to a distant country, and there he wasted his fortune in reckless and immoral living.
When they had eaten enough, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.”
Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord [always doing your best and doing more than is needed], being continually aware that your labor [even to the point of exhaustion] in the Lord is not futile nor wasted [it is never without purpose].
