David Defeats The Philistines

8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; and David heard of it and went out against them.

8 And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.

8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of David; when David heard of this, he went out to face them.

8 When the Philistines learned that David had been anointed king over all of Israel, all of the Philistines invaded to look for David. David heard about it and went out to fight them.

8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all went up in search of David; and he heard about it and went out against them.

9 Now the Philistines had come and (C)made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.

9 And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

9 Now the Philistines had come and raided in the Valley of Rephaim,(C)

9 Meanwhile, the Philistines had invaded and raided the Rephaim Valley.

9 Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the Valley of Rephaim.

10 David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You give them into my hand?” Then the Lord said to him, “Go up, for I will give them into your hand.”

10 And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.

10 so David inquired of God, “Should I go to war against the Philistines? Will You hand them over to me?”The Lord replied, “Go, and I will hand them over to you.”

10 So David asked God, "Am I to go out against the Philistines? Will you give me victory over them?" "Go out," the LORD replied to him, "and I'll put them right into your hand."

10 So David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will You hand them over to me?” Then the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will hand them over to you.”

11 So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David (c)defeated them there; and David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore they named that place (d)Baal-perazim.

11 So they came up to Baalperazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baalperazim.

11 So the Israelites went up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated the Philistines there. Then David said, “Like a bursting flood, God has used me to burst out against my enemies.” Therefore, they named that place the Lord Bursts Out.(a)

11 So David went out to Baal-perazim and defeated the Philistines there. David observed, "Like an overwhelming flood, God has overwhelmed my enemies, using me to do it." That's why that place is called Baal-perazim.

11 So Israel came up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated the Philistines there. Then David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore they named that place (b)Baal-perazim.

12 They abandoned their gods there; so David gave the order and they were burned with fire.

12 And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.

12 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David ordered that they be burned in the fire.

12 The Philistines abandoned their gods there, so David ordered that their idols be incinerated.

12 The Philistines abandoned their gods (idols) there; so David gave a command and they were burned in a fire [as the Law of Moses required].(A)

13 The Philistines made (D)yet another raid in the valley.

13 And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.

13 Once again the Philistines raided in the valley.

13 Later the Philistines invaded the Rephaim Valley again.

13 The Philistines again made a raid in the valley.

14 David inquired again of God, and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; circle around (e)behind them and come at them in front of the (f)balsam trees.

14 Therefore David inquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

14 So David again inquired of God, and God answered him, “Do not pursue them directly. Circle around them and attack them opposite the balsam trees.

14 When David asked God about it, God told him, "Don't directly attack them. Instead, go around them and come up against them opposite those balsam trees.

14 So David inquired again of God, and God said to him, “Do not go up after them; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees.

15 It shall be when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”

15 And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.

15 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then march out to battle, for God will have marched out ahead of you to attack the camp of the Philistines.”

15 When you hear the sound of marching coming from the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, because God will have gone out ahead of you to destroy the Philistine army."

15 It shall be when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike the Philistine army.”

16 David did just as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines from (g)Gibeon even as far as Gezer.

16 David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.

16 So David did exactly as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.

16 So David did just as God had ordered, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.

16 So David did just as God had commanded him, and they struck down the army of the Philistines from Gibeon as far as Gezer.

17 Then the fame of David went out into all the lands; and (E)the Lord brought the fear of him on all the nations.

17 And the fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.

17 Then David’s fame spread throughout the lands, and the Lord caused all the nations to be terrified of him.(D)

17 Then David's reputation spread through all of the neighboring countries, and the LORD caused all nations to be afraid of David.

17 Then David’s fame spread into all the lands; and the Lord caused all nations to fear him.
