Instructions For Timothy In Ephesus

3 As I urged you (a)upon my departure for (K)Macedonia, (b)remain on at (L)Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to (M)teach strange doctrines,

3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

3 As I urged you when I went to Macedonia,(F) remain in Ephesus(G) so that you may instruct certain people(H) not to teach different doctrine

3 When I was on my way to Macedonia, I urged you to stay in Ephesus so that you could instruct certain people to stop teaching false doctrine

3 As I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia, stay on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain individuals not to teach any different doctrines,

4 nor to (c)pay attention to (N)myths and endless (O)genealogies, which give rise to mere (P)speculation rather than (Q)furthering (d)the administration of God which is by faith.

4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

4 or to pay attention to myths(I) and endless genealogies. These promote empty speculations rather than God’s plan,(J) which operates by faith.

4 and occupying themselves with myths and endless genealogies. These things promote controversies rather than God's ongoing purpose, which involves faith.

4 nor to pay attention to legends (fables, myths) and endless genealogies, which give rise to useless speculation and meaningless arguments rather than advancing God’s program of instruction which is grounded in faith [and requires surrendering the entire self to God in absolute trust and confidence].

5 But the goal of our (e)(R)instruction is love (S)from a pure heart and a (T)good conscience and a sincere (U)faith.

5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

5 Now the goal of our instruction is love(K) that comes from a pure heart,(L) a good conscience,(M) and a sincere faith.(N)

5 The goal of this instruction is love that flows from a pure heart, from a clear conscience, and from a sincere faith.

5 But the goal of our instruction is love [which springs] from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

6 For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to (V)fruitless discussion,

6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

6 Some have deviated from these and turned aside to fruitless discussion.

6 Some people have left these qualities behind and have turned to fruitless discussion.

6 Some individuals have wandered away from these things into empty arguments and useless discussions,

7 (W)wanting to be (X)teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

7 They want to be teachers of the law, although they don’t understand what they are saying or what they are insisting on.

7 They want to be teachers of the Law, yet they do not understand either what they are talking about or the things about which they speak so confidently.

7 wanting to be teachers of the Law [of Moses], even though they do not understand the terms they use or the subjects about which they make [such] confident declarations.

8 But we know that (Y)the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,

8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

8 But we know that the law is good,(O) provided one uses it legitimately.

8 Of course, we know that the Law is good if a person uses it legitimately,

8 Now we know [without any doubt] that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully and appropriately,

9 realizing the fact that (Z)law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and (AA)rebellious, for the (AB)ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and (AC)profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers

9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

9 We know that the law is not meant for a righteous person, but for the lawless and rebellious,(P) for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and irreverent, for those who kill their fathers and mothers, for murderers,

9 that is, if he understands that the Law is not intended for righteous people but for lawbreakers and rebels, for ungodly people and sinners, for those who are unholy and irreverent, for those who kill their fathers, their mothers, or other people,

9 understanding the fact that law is not enacted for the righteous person [the one in right standing with God], but for lawless and rebellious people, for the ungodly and sinful, for the irreverent and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,

10 (f)and (g)(AD)immoral men (h)and (AE)homosexuals (i)and (AF)kidnappers (j)and (AG)liars (k)and (AH)perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to (AI)sound teaching,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

10 for the sexually immoral(Q) and homosexuals,(R) for kidnappers,(b) liars,(S) perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching(T)

10 for those involved in sexual immorality, for homosexuals, for kidnappers, for liars, for false witnesses, and for whatever else goes against the healthy teaching

10 for sexually immoral persons, for homosexuals, for (a)kidnappers and slave traders, for liars, for perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,

11 according to (AJ)the glorious gospel of (AK)the blessed God, with which I have been (AL)entrusted.

11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

11 based on the glorious gospel(U) of the blessed God,(V) which was entrusted to me.(W)

11 that agrees with the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

Paul's Thankfulness For The Mercy Shown To Him

12 I thank (AM)Christ Jesus our Lord, who has (AN)strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, (AO)putting me into service,

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

12 I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord who has strengthened(X) me, because He considered me faithful, appointing me to the ministry—

12 I thank the Messiah Jesus, our Lord, who gives me strength, that he has considered me faithful and has appointed me to his service.

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has granted me [the needed] strength and made me able for this, because He considered me faithful and trustworthy, putting me into service [for this ministry],

13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a (AP)persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was (AQ)shown mercy because (AR)I acted ignorantly in unbelief;

13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

13 one who was formerly a blasphemer,(Y) a persecutor,(Z) and an arrogant man.(AA) But I received mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief.

13 In the past I was a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. But I received mercy because I acted ignorantly in my unbelief,

13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer [of our Lord] and a persecutor [of His church] and a shameful and outrageous and violent aggressor [toward believers]. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief.

14 and the (AS)grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the (AT)faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.

14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

14 And the grace of our Lord overflowed, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed toward me, along with the faith and love that are in the Messiah Jesus.

14 The grace of our Lord [His amazing, unmerited favor and blessing] flowed out in superabundance [for me, together] with the faith and love which are [realized] in Christ Jesus.

15 (AU)It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that (AV)Christ Jesus came into the world to (AW)save sinners, among whom (AX)I am foremost of all.

15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

15 This saying is trustworthy(AB) and deserving of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world(AC) to save sinners”(AD)—and I am the worst of them.(AE)

15 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves complete acceptance: To this world Messiah came, sinful people to reclaim.

15 (b)This is a faithful and trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance and approval, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost.

16 Yet for this reason I (AY)found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might (AZ)demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those (l)who would believe in Him for eternal life.

16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

16 But I received mercy(AF) for this reason, so that in me, the worst of them, Christ Jesus might demonstrate His extraordinary patience(AG) as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.(AH)

16 I am the worst of them. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the worst sinner, the Messiah Jesus might demonstrate all of his patience as an example for those who would believe in him for eternal life.

16 Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost [of sinners], Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example or pattern for those who (c)would believe in Him for eternal life.

17 Now to the (BA)King (m)eternal, (BB)immortal, (BC)invisible, the (BD)only God, (BE)be honor and glory (n)forever and ever. Amen.

17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

17 Now to the King(AI) eternal,(AJ) immortal,(AK) invisible, the only(c) God,(AL) be honor(AM) and glory(AN) forever and ever. Amen.(AO)

17 Now to the King Eternal the immortal, invisible, and only God be honor and glory forever and ever! Amen.

17 Now to the King of the ages [eternal], immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies(AP) previously made about you, so that by them you may strongly engage in battle,

18 Timothy, my child, I am instructing you in keeping with the prophecies made earlier about you, so that by following them you may continue to fight the good fight

18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, so that [inspired and aided] by them you may fight the good fight [in contending with false teachers],

19 keeping (BJ)faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to (p)(BK)their faith.

19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

19 having faith(AQ) and a good conscience.(AR) Some(AS) have rejected these and have suffered the shipwreck of their faith.

19 with faith and a good conscience. By ignoring their consciences, some people have destroyed their faith like a wrecked ship.

19 keeping your faith [leaning completely on God with absolute trust and confidence in His guidance] and having a good conscience; for some [people] have rejected [their moral compass] and have made a shipwreck of their faith.

20 (q)Among these are (BL)Hymenaeus and (BM)Alexander, whom I have (BN)handed over to Satan, so that they will be (BO)taught not to blaspheme.

20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

20 Hymenaeus(AT) and Alexander(AU) are among them, and I have delivered them to Satan,(AV) so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.

20 These include Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I handed over to Satan so that they may learn not to blaspheme.

20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have (d)handed over to Satan, so that they will be disciplined and taught not to blaspheme.
