Timothy's Spiritual Heritage

3 I constantly thank my God whom I serve with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did when I remember you in my prayers night and day,

3 (H)I thank God, whom I (I)serve with a (J)clear conscience (c)the way my forefathers did, (K)as I constantly remember you in my (d)prayers night and day,

3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

3 I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience(E) as my ancestors did, when I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day.(F)

3 I thank God, whom I worship and serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day,

4 recalling your tears and longing to see you so that I can be filled with joy.

4 (L)longing to see you, (M)even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy.

4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

4 Remembering your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy,

4 and as I recall your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy.

5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first existed in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that this faith also exists in you.

5 (e)For I am mindful of the (N)sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and (O)your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.

5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

5 clearly recalling your sincere faith(G) that first lived in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice,(H) and that I am convinced is in you also.

5 I remember your sincere and unqualified faith [the surrendering of your entire self to God in Christ with confident trust in His power, wisdom and goodness, a faith] which first lived in [the heart of] your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am confident that it is in you as well.

Paul's Advice For Timothy

6 For this reason, I am reminding you to fan into flames the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands.

6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh (P)the gift of God which is in you through (Q)the laying on of my hands.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

6 Therefore, I remind you to keep ablaze(a) the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands.(I)

6 That is why I remind you to (a)fan into flame the gracious gift of God, [that inner fire—the special endowment] which is in you through the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination].

7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but one of power, love, and self-discipline.

7 For God has not given us a (R)spirit of (f)timidity, but of power and love and (g)discipline.

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

7 For God has not given us a spirit(b) of fearfulness,(J) but one of power,(K) love,(L) and sound judgment.

7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].

Exhortation To Share Paul's Suffering

8 Therefore, never be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, his prisoner. Instead, by God's power, join me in suffering for the sake of the gospel.

8 Therefore (S)do not be ashamed of the (T)testimony of our Lord or of me (U)His prisoner, but join with me in (V)suffering for the (W)gospel according to the power of God,

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

8 So don’t be ashamed(M) of the testimony about our Lord,(N) or of me His prisoner.(O) Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power(P) of God.

8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord or about me His prisoner, but with me take your share of suffering for the gospel [continue to preach regardless of the circumstances], in accordance with the power of God [for His power is invincible],

9 He saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our own accomplishments, but according to his own purpose and the grace that was given to us in the Messiah Jesus before time began.

9 who has (X)saved us and (Y)called us with a holy (Z)calling, (AA)not according to our works, but according to His own (AB)purpose and grace which was granted us in (AC)Christ Jesus from (AD)all eternity,

9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

9 He has saved us and called uswith a holy calling,(Q)not according to our works,(R)but according to His own purpose(S) and grace,which was given to us in Christ Jesusbefore time began.

9 for He delivered us and saved us and called us with a holy calling [a calling that leads to a consecrated life—a life set apart—a life of purpose], not because of our works [or because of any personal merit—we could do nothing to earn this], but because of His own purpose and grace [His amazing, undeserved favor] which was granted to us in Christ Jesus before the world began [eternal ages ago],

10 Now, however, that grace has been revealed through the coming of our Savior the Messiah Jesus, who has destroyed death and through the gospel has brought life and release from death into full view.

10 but (AE)now has been revealed by the (AF)appearing of our Savior (AG)Christ Jesus, who (AH)abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

10 This has now been made evidentthrough the appearing(T) of our Savior Christ Jesus,who has abolished death(U)and has brought life(V) and immortality to lightthrough the gospel.

10 but now [that extraordinary purpose and grace] has been fully disclosed and realized by us through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus who [through His incarnation and earthly ministry] abolished death [making it null and void] and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

11 For the sake of this gospel I was appointed to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the gentiles.

11 (AI)for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.

11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

11 For this gospel I was appointed(W) a herald, apostle, and teacher,(c)

11 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher [of this good news regarding salvation].

12 That is why I suffer as I do. However, I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I'm convinced that he is able to protect what he has entrusted to me until the day that he comes.

12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but (AJ)I am not ashamed; for I know (AK)whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to (AL)guard what I have entrusted to Him (h)until (AM)that day.

12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

12 and that is why I suffer(X) these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know the One I have believed in and am persuaded that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to me(d)(Y) until that day.(Z)

12 This is why I suffer as I do. Still, I am not ashamed; for I know Him [and I am personally acquainted with Him] whom I have believed [with absolute trust and confidence in Him and in the truth of His deity], and I am persuaded [beyond any doubt] that He is able to guard that which I have entrusted to Him until (b)that day [when I stand before Him].(A)

13 (i)(AN)Retain the (AO)standard of (AP)sound words (AQ)which you have heard from me, in the (AR)faith and love which are in (AS)Christ Jesus.

13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

13 Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching(AA) that you have heard from me,(AB) in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

13 Keep and follow the pattern of sound teaching (doctrine) which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.

14 With the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us, protect the good treasure that has been entrusted to you.

14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who (AT)dwells in us, the (j)(AU)treasure which has been entrusted to you.

14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who lives in us, that good thing entrusted to you.

14 Guard [with greatest care] and keep unchanged, the treasure [that precious truth] which has been entrusted to you [that is, the good news about salvation through personal faith in Christ Jesus], through [the help of] the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

16 The Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and showed me kindness [comforting and reviving me like fresh air] and he was not ashamed of my chains [for Christ’s sake];

17 Instead, when he arrived in Rome he searched diligently for me and found me.

17 but when he was in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me—

17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

17 On the contrary, when he was in Rome,(AI) he diligently searched for me and found me.

17 but [instead] when he reached Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me—
